Hands-On Review: Canon EOS Rebel T4i
The Canon EOS Rebel T4i features an 18 megapixel APS-C-size CMOS sensor, a newly introduced DIGIC 5 image processor and improved autofocus features. The standard AI Servo autofocus system has been updated and now features 9 cross-type AF points, including a precise dual cross f/2.8 center point, for acquiring consistent and precise focus.
The Hybrid CMOS AF system combines both phase and contrast detection methods for expedited focus with subject tracking, giving way to the new Movie Servo AF continuous autofocus mode, which is ideal for use when recording HD video. The Rebel T4i also has a 3-inch Vari-angle touch screen LCD for intuitive menu navigation and image playback at a variety of angles.
The T4i is available in a kit with either an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens or an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which incorporates Canon’s new STM stepping motor for smooth, quiet auto focusing. Another lens that pairs well with the T4i is the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens, which is a normal-length prime lens with a highly compact build. This lens features a wide f/2.8 maximum aperture for depth of field control and also integrates the STM motor to make use of the quiet auto focusing properties of the Rebel T4i.
