Samsung announced on April 25 that all previous Samsung Windows PC products will now be unified under the ATIV brand. ATIV was originally used by Samsung for their convertible PC devices, but with the growing emergence of computer/tablet hybrids and touchscreen Ultrabooks, Samsung decided to represent the convergence of PC and mobile technologies by unifying all of them under the ATIV brand. What does this mean for current Samsung Windows PC products? Well, current Windows PC products from Samsung will see a name change. See below for a full list of all the brand name changes.
Samsung also released an Ultrabook and a notebook sporting the new ATIV brand name, which can be seen as Samsung’s way of portraying their commitment to the ATIV brand. The Samsung 14” ATIV Book 5 is an ultra-slim and ultraportable Ultrabook, designed for high mobility while still maintaining reliable performance. Measuring 0.82” thin and weighing 4.19 pounds, the ATIV Book 5 has an aluminum-and-fiberglass design with a mineral ash black finish. The ATIV Book 5 houses a dual-core Ivy Bridge 1.8 GHz Intel® Core™ i5-3337U processor with 4GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM for reliable performance. It also has a 500GB 5400 rpm hard drive with 24GB ExpressCache technology for a balance of storage capacity and speed. 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi support allows for fast wireless Internet access, while the Bluetooth 4.0 technology allows you to connect wirelessly to Bluetooth-compatible peripherals and accessories.
With Windows 8 (64-bit) as its operating system, the ATIV Book 5 has a 14-inch capacitive touchscreen to take full advantage of the multi-touch gestures integrated into Windows 8. The screen has LED backlight technology, a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1366 x 768 native resolution powered by integrated Intel® HD Graphics 4000. There is also an HDMI port so you’ll be able to output video to an external display, such as an HDTV. There are also built-in JBL stereo speakers with SoundAlive technology for an enhanced listening experience.
The Samsung 15.6” ATIV Book 6 is a bit larger than its ATIV Book 5 counterpart, edging it out of the Ultrabook category. While still fairly portable, the ATIV Book 6 truly shines when it comes to performance. Housing a powerful quad-core Ivy Bridge 2.4 GHz Intel® Core™ i7-3635QM processor with 8GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, you’ll experience fast and smooth performance while multi-tasking between applications, as well as when you’re running CPU or graphics-intensive programs. The large 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive allows you to store all your media files, such as music, photos and movies. For wireless Internet access, the ATIV Book 6 utilizes 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. You can also use the Bluetooth 4.0 technology to wirelessly connect Bluetooth-enabled devices to the ATIV Book 6.
Like the ATIV Book 5, the Samsung ATIV Book 6 comes with the Windows 8 (64-bit) operating system installed, so it’s only fitting that the ATIV Book 6 would also have a capacitive touchscreen. The 15.6” display incorporates touch support to allow you to utilize the multi-touch gestures for the full Windows 8 experience. The screen also has LED backlight technology, a 16:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution powered by an AMD Radeon HD 8770M graphics chipset. Just like the ATIV Book 5, the ATIV Book 6 also has and HDMI port and JBL stereo speakers with SoundAlive technology for an enhanced listening experience.
While originally released under the Series 9 brand name, the Samsung 13.3” Series 9 Ultrabook has been rebranded as the Samsung 13.3” ATIV Book 9. It houses a dual-core Ivy Bridge 2.0 GHz Intel® Core™ i7-3537U processor with 4GB of DDR3 RAM for fast, reliable performance. While the ATIV Book 5 and 6 opted for a hybrid or traditional hard drive respectively, the ATIV Book 9 comes with a 128GB solid-state drive for improved data speeds. Like the ATIV Book 5 and 6, the ATIV Book 9 supports 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 technology.
The ATIV Book 9 doesn’t utilize a touchscreen like the ATIV Book 5 and 6, but its display isn’t slouchy. The 13.3” features LED backlight technology, a 16:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution powered by integrated Intel® HD Graphics 4000. There is also a micro HDMI port so you’ll be able to output video to an external display. While the stereo speakers on the ATIV Book 9 are not made by JBL, they still feature SoundAlive technology.
When it comes to software, all ATIV computers will come with Samsung SideSync technology pre-installed. SideSync allows your Samsung ATIV computer to sync with your Samsung Android smartphone or tablet via USB. However, the USB connection is more than just for data transferring and charging your mobile device. SideSync lets you synchronize actions, such as typing out texts on your ATIV computer and sending them out through your smartphone. With a Galaxy phone, you can use your Phone as a second screen for your PC, seamlessly moving the mouse from one screen to the other. SideSync essentially syncs Windows 8 and Android together for smoother operation and more functionality.
