Advancements in technology have allowed manufacturers to shrink the size of broadcast-quality camcorders, while at the same time squeezing in better performance. A case in point is Sony's new PMW-100 camcorder; ENG professionals sporting this compact new unit will appreciate the lighter load and greater maneuverability.
In addition to being the newest member of Sony’s XDCAM HD22 product lineup, the PMW-100 is also the smallest 50Mbps-capable video camcorder on the market today, which should make it the darling of videographers and ENG’ers who require a pro video rig that can be used quickly and nimbly in the tightest quarters. The camera’s 3.5-inch, 852 x 480 pixel LCD screen should also improve shooting flexibility.
Sony’s PMW-100 contains a new 1/2.9-inch Exmor CMOS imaging sensor that claims a minimum illumination level of 0.08 lux, which can change the outcome of the game when shooting under murky lighting conditions. As for output quality, Sony’s PMW-100 can capture 1080p, 1080i and 720p video at up to 50Mbps using MPEG HD422 compression and 24-bit, four-channel audio at 48 kHz (uncompressed). As for frame rates, the PMW-100 can record video with frame rates ranging from 1 fps to 60 fps in 720p mode and from 1 fps to 30 fps in 1080p mode. In the optics department, the Sony PMW-100 has a 5.4-54mm (40-400mm in 35mm equivalent) zoom lens, which should provide enough optical coverage for most professional applications.
The Sony PMW-100 records to a choice of high speed SxS, Memory Stick, SD card and XQD memory cards and features HD/SD-SDI output, Genlock input, composite output, time code input/output, i.LINK (HDV/DV) input/output and A/V output.
