Two new lenses from Sony have hit the market: The A-mount SAL18135 18-135mm and the E-mount SEL-18200LE 18-200mm zoom lenses, the former with a maximum aperture of f/3.5-5.6, the latter with a maximum of f/3.5-6.3. The 18-135mm covers a range of popular focal lengths, plus ultimate flexibility for everyday use. Direct Manual Focus gives you the ability to switch rapidly between autofocus and manual focus without having to take your eyes off the viewfinder, enabling you to capture those fleeting opportunities that can be missed in a split second. The 18-200mm is a high-magnification lens with a lightweight form factor that’s ideal for compact cameras and on-the-road shooting. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization gives you clear, blur-free images for a greater handheld shooting ability.
The 18-135mm (35mm equivalent of 27-202.5mm) mid-range zoom makes it possible to capture a range of rich expressions for a broad array of situations. The Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) delivers even, level and quiet autofocus while enhancing AF response when photographing subjects in motion. The lens possesses both ED (extra-low dispersion) and aspherical elements, which capture images with minimized flare and low color aberration levels. These elements correct visual abnormalities more effectively across the whole zoom range, increase light transmission, and improve color fidelity while effectively helping to reduce the overall weight.
Internal lens elements move while focusing, keeping the overall length of the lens the same. This allows for faster focusing that won’t change lens equilibrium.
The aperture blades form a near circle at the wide settings, utilized for low-light shooting. As a result, spot-light sources have a pleasant, circular, defocused effect.
This lens, like all those in the A-mount (alpha) line, is best used on APS-C size DSLR cameras, and is not recommended for full-frame DSLR bodies like the A900. The lens will only be able to realize a limited resolution and will not guarantee accurate auto exposure performance when used on full-frame DSLRs.
Substantially smaller and lighter than comparable lenses, the 18-200mm lens is great for a variety of shooting applications. Reducing the size of the autofocus motor and optical IS unit allows it to achieve this compact size. The broad focal length coverage of 18mm wide angle to 200mm telephoto—27-300mm 35mm equivalent—makes this lens a great travel companion. It can capture expansive landscapes, portraits with blurred backgrounds, and even action sports and nature shots. Optical SteadyShot technology greatly minimizes blur caused by camera shake and also reduces dependence on high ISO settings when photographing in dark surroundings. This improves the effectiveness of modes like Hand-held Twilight and Anti-Motion Blur.
The lens is equipped with a pair of ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, as well as four aspherical elements. It makes use of the same popular circular aperture found in many other lenses, which allows you to capture photos with pleasing bokeh.
The SEL-18200LE allows for 11x high-magnification zoom, bringing faraway subjects in close and allowing you to capture great facial expressions that would otherwise only be possible in close-ups.
