A variety of interactive features in the newly announced Yamaha DGX-650 makes learning, playing, and sharing music fun for everyone, from the aspiring beginner to the accomplished musician. Available in black or white versions, the portable electric piano delivers an expressive piano sound that is just the beginning of what the instrument can do. Speaking of beginnings, the grand piano sound is derived from a meticulous sampling of the company’s acclaimed CFIIIS 9-foot concert grand piano. The samples represent a number of dynamic levels from pianissimo to fortissimo, providing the performer with the delicate touch of a soft passage, or the power of two-handed chords.
But there’s more to a piano sound than just the sound of hammers hitting strings. Damper Resonance digitally reproduces the sympathetic interactions that occur between the strings on acoustic pianos, and depressing the damper pedal allows the harmonics of the other strings to wash over the played notes until the pedal is released. And to take advantage of these features, an 88-key weighted GHS action key bed provides a heavier touch in the low end and lighter touch in the high end. All of this is supported by 128-note polyphony for dropout-free performances even while layering two voices and playing two-handed sustained chords with heavy pedaling.
To complement the performance aspects, a pair of amplifiers and four speakers deliver a realistic representation of an acoustic piano, and an auxiliary input allows for connecting other audio sources for playback through the piano’s speakers. This could be used for practice, playing over backing tracks, or simply for listening pleasure. And speaking of backing tracks, professionally arranged play-along XG song files from famous artists are available, making the keyboard a “piano karaoke” system (song files sold separately). Additionally, the Yamaha Education Suite teaches playing performance by breaking songs down into individual components, like pitch and rhythm, and reconstructing them once they have been mastered.
Other enhancements include Smart Chord that creates entire chords from simple Pop triads to complex jazz 7th and 9th chords using a single finger, while Accompaniment Styles create the rest of a virtual band. The Style Recommender function suggests a list of suitable Styles based on what’s been played—play a piano part, drum part, or just tap a simple rhythm, and Style Recommender will create a list of appropriate Styles based on what’s been played. USB audio (WAV) recording/playback allows for recording performances or MIDI songs as uncompressed CD-quality audio to a USB flash drive. And, of course, there is a large variety of DSP effects, including reverb and EQ.
The DGX-650 ships with a matching stand, sustain pedal, music rest, and external power supply. A metronome is included and the keyboard can be transposed an octave up or down. To further enhance the playing experience, the optional LP-7A pedal unit adds three foot pedals that engage a range of expressive effects similar to those produced by the pedals on an acoustic piano.
