Regardless of how many times you've relied on your air conditioner this year, summer doesn't officially begin until 1:04 a.m. on June 21st (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyhow). So we thought it would be a great time to highlight a few practical pieces of gear that come in handy when the days are long and toasty.
This week in the news:Lots of cool new ASUS gear was announced at the Computex show in Taiwan; Canon announced the new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens, and version 2.0 firmware update for the EOS M; Tokina introduced the AT-X 12-28mm f/4 for APS-C cameras; and there were some interesting advances in memory card technology.

I wanted to be a wildlife photographer in the worst way! Having been very fortunate to spend most of my youth in the great outdoors, watching such programs as Mutual of Omaha's 'Wild Kingdom' on TV, and being influenced by my older sister (who is an amazing artist), it just seemed that it was where I should be. But I was not even 20, with the limited funds and limited gear that comes with that age. My longest lens was a 200mm, and while I accomplished enough to get the “nice photo, you should become a photographer” comment from friends, it wasn’t good enough. More importantly, my photography wasn’t growing, and the fun was becoming frustration. The commitment had to be made—in for a penny, in for a pound!
This week in the news: Apple released new hardware with the 16GB iPod touch; Canon updated the firmware of the 1Ds Mark III, 1D Mark IV and 1D X; YouTube added slow motion controls; and Cotton Carrier introduced a new hand strap with a built-in tripod plate.

David Burnett has been an award-winning photojournalist for more than four decades. He has been named one of the "100 Most-Important People in Photography" by American Photo magazine, and is a founding member of Contact Press Images, the New York-based photojournalism agency.
