Nikon Inc. repair department does not consider the D700 a professional camera.
We were wavering on this one too, but truth is, there are a number of shooters using the D700 - not to mention the D300s - as professional tools.
It's true the D700 is not built to the level of durability as Nikon's D3-series cameras , but it's still a serious contender.
Based on the same criteria, you can also argue Canon's 5D MKII (compared to the 1Ds MK III & 1D MKIV) and Sony's Alpha a900 are equally not pro-level. It all depends on your needs, the nature of your work, and how rough you are with your gear. Can any of these cameras be used in a pro portrait studio or wedding shooter? You betcha'. Can you shoot an annual report with them? Sure. Just treat them with respect and pack them away neatly and safely when you're through for the day.
