These are great tips!!  I'm a bit confused about vertical and horizontal.  You write, "Remember that your briefcase will be laid down flat going through the scanner. With that in mind, pack the hard drives vertically."  Perhaps a picture of what this looks like will explain it best?  Also, what is vertical and horizontal when it comes to a check-in piece of luggage?  Again, a photo would help...
