@Brooke: I think what Moose means is that while you are packing your bag/suitcase is laid out flat (horizontal) and open in front of you. Packing items vertically means put them in so that they are vertical with the bag/suitcase in its current orientation. This results in items positioned side by side instead of being stacked on top of each other.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
