Question: Is the Drobo a stripped RAID format? In any case, how can the FS or S hold "up to 10 TBs of data"? I thought the point to all this was redundancy?
Drobo uses their own proprietary protocol for data protection called BeyondRAID -- not sure exactly how it works in regards to parity disks, etc, but it does cut down on available storage space. They have an explanation that doesn't get too technical on their web site. They also have a storage calculator that lets you populate a virtual Drobo with drives -- an S or FS with 5x 2TB drives will give you 7.26GB of available space with single-disk redundancy, 5.44TB with dual-disk redundancy.
