As a 28-300 and EF2x II user, the picture of the 2x Extender indicates that they will not be usable together. The reason is mechanical, the 28-300 lens system moves back toward the body a fair way during zooming, the extender appears to project forwards from the body by enough to be a problem.

I can only use my 2x Extender with my 100-400 Canon, and then it only works with manual focus because the aperture effectively becomes too small for auto-focus..
