Shooters looking for a thin-profile digicam that features high resolution, the option of shooting stills or HD video and a large, easy-to-use touch-screen display should take a gander at one of Nikon's newest CoolPix offerings, the Nikon CoolPix S80.
Nikon's Coolpix S80 packs a 14.1-megapixel CCD, which is powered by Nikon's latest image processor, the EXPEED C2. On the optical side, the CoolPix S80 features a 5x power, 6.3 to 31.5mm Nikkor zoom lens, which contains 13 elements in 10 groups, and approximates the field of view of a 35 to 175mm lens on a 35mm camera. To better ensure sharp pictures under low-light conditions, the CoolPix S80 has a combination image-sensor shift and electronic vibration control (VR) for stills (JPEGs) and lens shift for video capture (720p with stereo sound).
The S80's viewing system consists of a widescreen 3.5", 819,000-dot OLED touch-screen display, that like its larger sibling, the CoolPix P7000, features 5 levels of brightness control for optimizing viewing under all lighting conditions.
To better enable disappointment-free portraits, the CoolPix S80 features a Smart Portrait System that includes a Smile Timer, which will only trigger the shutter when it detects a smile, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, Face-Priority AF that can automatically detect up to 12 faces, three levels of Skin Softening, which can be applied while shooting or post capture, and two Blink-prevention modes. In addition, the CoolPix S80 features 17 pre-set Shooting modes as well as an Easy Auto Mode, for the times you simply want to "point and shoot."
The ISO range of the Nikon CoolPix S80 can be set from 80 through 1600 and expanded to ISO 6400 (at 3Mp) as needed. Powered by a rechargeable EN-EL10 lithium-ion battery, you can expect to capture about 150 JPEGs or about an hour and five minutes of HD recording time per charge.
