Kindle Fire HDX overview

  • 1Description

The Kindle 16GB Fire HDX 8.9" Tablet features the Fire OS 3.0 Mojito operating system and an 8.9" HD 2560 x 1600 multi-touch display. The tablet supports multitasking and seamless app to app transitions as well, thanks to its 2GB of RAM memory and a fast, powerful 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor. This model also provides 16GB of flash storage capacity and 5GB of free cloud storage. You can use the tablet for a variety of entertainment and work applications. It also has a parent mode, which makes it great for kids. You can use the tablet to mirror content on your TV screen as well.

For connectivity, the Kindle Fire HDX features dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, which gives you access to the Internet from anywhere there's a Wi-Fi hotspot or from your home wireless network. It also provides Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR wireless technology with support for A2DP. You can use Bluetooth to connect peripheral devices and stream music to Bluetooth speakers. The tablet is equipped with a 720p HD front-facing webcam and an 8MP rear camera with Electronic Image Stabilization, an LED flash and 1080p HD video capture. Plus, the tablet's battery lasts up to 12 hours for all day entertainment.

HDX Display
The Kindle Fire HDX has an 8.9" display with high-definition 2560 x 1600 resolution and an impressive pixel density of 339 pixels per inch (ppi). The HDX display provides an immersive multimedia experience with over four million pixels for vivid, lifelike images that go beyond standard HD. The display also features Full HD 1080p video playback, reduced glare and an advanced polarizing filter.
100% Color Accuracy
The HDX display features 100% sRGB color accuracy, displaying images and videos as the photographer or videographer intended.
Dynamic Image Contrast
The HDX display features dynamic image contrast, a unique feature that automatically optimizes the color of each pixel based on the amount of light in your surroundings. This makes images and videos even easier to see in any lighting conditions - including outdoors.
Lightweight Design
At 13.2 oz, this model is 34% lighter than the previous generation. This has been achieved by integrating the capacitive touch layer directly into the glass display and creating a unique magnesium unibody from a single piece of machined magnesium. Plus, the tablet features a blend of glass and nylon - the same material used in high-performance race cars. The result is a lightweight, durable and portable tablet.
Smaller Bezel, Cleaner Lines
Engineered for increased usability, the Kindle Fire HDX features an innovative design with a smaller bezel and cleaner lines. It also has optimized button and charger port placements.
Powerful Quad-Core Processor
Kindle Fire HDX tablets are powered by the 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. It provides three times more processing power than the previous-generation Kindle Fire HD and, combined with 2GB of RAM, provides faster app launch times, quicker website load times, smoother multi-tasking and better overall performance.
Custom Dolby Audio
Kindle Fire HDX uses the power of Dolby Digital Plus to create a high-quality audio experience. Dolby Digital Plus includes technology that adjusts volume, creates virtual surround sound and delivers easier-to-understand dialogue in movies and TV shows. It's also designed to automatically optimize the audio profile based on what you're doing (with or without headphones), such as watching a movie, listening to music or talking on Skype.
Console-Quality Graphics
The Adreno 330 graphics processor delivers high frame rates and console quality graphics with four times the performance of the previous generation Kindle Fire HD.
Long Battery Life
With advanced power management technology, the Kindle Fire HDX delivers a long 12 hours of battery life for reading, surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video or listening to music. If you're just reading, the tablet automatically powers down unused system components, extending the battery life to 18 hours. The battery can be fully charged with the included PowerFast charger in under five hours. If you use another micro-USB power source, it may take a little longer to charge the battery.
Rear-Facing Camera
Kindle Fire HDX features an 8MP rear-facing camera that allows for high-resolution photos and 1080p HD video. The rear camera includes an LED flash, Electronic Image Stabilization to remove hand jitters, a wide-aperture 5P f/2.2 lens, and support for panorama and High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging. An updated camera app also includes photo editing features and an updated camera mode with filmstrip.
Front-Facing Camera
The Kindle Fire HDX tablet has a front-facing 720p HD webcam, which is good for Skype HD video calls and taking photos to share via Facebook or e-mail.
Edit & Share Photos
The Kindle's beautifully designed photo app makes it easy to view your albums or watch personal videos. And sharing your photos couldn't be easier - simply tap on individual images to e-mail them to anyone you like. Editing on the tablet is also simple - just select a photo to begin editing.
Optional Camera-Ready Case
The optional Origami case for the Kindle Fire HDX features a custom slide that quickly exposes the rear-facing camera and automatically launches the camera application so you don't miss a great photo opportunity. The case is sold separately.
Live Support with Mayday
Simply tap the "Mayday" button to be connected for free to an Amazon expert who can co-pilot you through any feature by drawing on your screen, walking you through how to do something yourself, or doing it for you - whatever works best. Mayday is available 24/7, 365 days a year, and it's free. Throughout the process, you will be able to see your tech advisor live on your screen, but they won't see you. 15 seconds or less is the Mayday response time goal.
Fast, Powerful Wi-Fi
When it comes to HD content, bandwidth is everything. Without it, you get video buffering, slow downloads and dropped connections. Kindle Fire HDX solves this issue by using dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi (MIMO+HT40). With this, you'll enjoy fewer dropped connections and faster media streaming, plus you'll be able to go further from your wireless hotspot than with other tablets. The tablet uses the 802.11 a/b/g/n standard with support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 security using password authentication. It does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) Wi-Fi networks.
Fire OS 3.0 Mojito Operating System
The Kindle Fire tablets are powered by Fire OS 3.0 Mojito, which starts with Android and adds cloud services, a content-forward user interface, built-in media libraries, productivity apps and low-level platform enhancements to integrate Amazon's digital content and improve performance for Kindle Fire tablets.
Faster Access to Apps & Info
Fire OS 3.0 includes an enhanced, content-first home screen that allows users to easily switch between viewing their recent content and apps in Carousel View or favorites in Grid View. The innovative Quick Switch feature uses a side swipe gesture to easily move between multiple apps or individual content items without navigating home.
Easier Content Management
1-Tap Archive frees up space on your Kindle Fire by identifying items that have not been used recently and provides a 1-tap option to quickly move them to your cloud for later retrieval. Optimized Download ensures the performance of the app you are using isn't impacted by background download activity.
Accessibility Features

Screen Reader features IVONA's award-winning natural language text-to-speech voice. It also includes adjustable font sizes/color, and a built-in Oxford dictionary.
