Vortex V200 Overview

  • 1Description

This updated 2018 version of the Vortex Viper HD 8x42 Binocular gets upgraded with a wider field of view and longer eye relief from the previous iteration to make views more spacious and viewing through them easier and more comfortable.

Optically, this binocular benefits from proprietary XR anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics that maximize light transmission through the light path and improve contrast and color rendition across the entire visual spectrum. The compact roof prisms are dielectric coated. Phase-corrected coatings limit internal interference, light loss, and diffraction while maximizing light transmission through the prism system. These features work together to produce bright, sharp, and clear high-contrast views with accurate color fidelity and crisp resolution. The larger objective lenses boost its light-gathering capabilities to draw in the available light and maintain bright images even when conditions are less than ideal, such as in the pre-dawn and late dusk hours or when looking into dense brush or using under heavy cloud cover.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that allow the Viper HD to withstand the rigors of the trail. The optical tubes are O-ring sealed and argon filled to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging if the weather turns or they take an accidental spill in a stream or puddle. Protecting the optical components is a polycarbonate chassis that is lightweight and durable as well as resistant to the expansion and contraction that metal suffers from and which can lead to fuzzy views over time. Vortex includes a GlassPak binocular harness case that protects the optic when not in use while keeping it close to your body, preventing swinging and swaying as you move or climb over rough and rocky terrain. Objective lens caps and a one-piece ocular rainguard protect the exterior lens surfaces. To keep the caps and rainguard safe during use, they are tethered to the body and strap, respectively.

Optical Performance
  • 8x power brings subjects in for observations without sacrificing field of view, eye relief, and exit pupil
  • 42mm objective lenses boost light-gathering capability versus smaller lenses for improved vision in challenging conditions such as at dawn and dusk
  • Compact roof prism light path ensures performance without adding excessive weight and bulk
  • Phase-correcting prism coatings eliminate internal interference to improve color and contrast
  • Dielectric prism coatings boost internal prism reflectivity to greater than 99% to maximize light transmission through the prism with minimal loss and diffraction
  • High-density (HD), extra-low dispersion (ED) glass lens elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast and improved color rendition and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
  • Proprietary XR anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics increase light transmission for accurate color fidelity and improved contrast and clarity
  • ArmorTek exterior lens coatings resist scratches and abrasions while allowing oil, dirt, and sap to be cleaned off without leaving smudges or residue
  • Short 6.5-foot minimum focusing distance allows for extremely detailed observations of small birds, bugs, insects, flora, and fauna at close range
  • Wide 62° apparent angle of view provides a spacious field of view
  • Generous 409-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed bridge configuration provides a solid platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip-resistant center focus knob is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather or while wearing gloves
  • Locking right eye dioptric correction lets you compensate for individual eye prescription for tack-sharp views
  • 56-75 mm interpupillary distance range allows easy viewing by a wide variety of users
  • Twist-up click-stop rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with an optional adapter for hands-free use to reduce vibration and arm fatigue
  • Long 18mm eye relief reduces eyestrain to make for more comfortable viewing, especially over extended periods
  • Wide 5.25mm exit pupil will completely cover pupils as they open and fully dilate in low light to ensure the whole scene remains in view without vignetting
Construction Details
  • Lightweight and impact-resistant polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature resistant, limiting the expansion and contraction that can occur with metal materials and which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time
  • Rubber armoring provides protection from bumps and impacts while offering a positive slip-resistant grip in cold and wet weather
  • O-ring sealed and argon filled to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme changes in temperature or environmental conditions
  • Tethered objective lens caps and one-piece ocular rainguard protect the lens surfaces without the fear of losing them when not in use
  • GlassPak binocular harness holds the optic close to your body to keep it safe and secure without swinging or hanging when moving or climbing over rough terrain

Vortex V200 Reviews

8x42 Viper HD Binocular (2018 Edition) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent in every way amazing clear and sharp view close or far. Perfectly weighted and a great case with harness. Very bright like my 7x50 binos

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great  for my needs Top ratings seem justified. Seem a bit sharper than my older 7x50 Fujinon Polaris and a lot lighter.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed A bit disappointed.  Clarity and sharpness is ok but not superior to my  50 year old binoculars. They are just ok.  I expected more for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good value binos Im not a super-critical user, I have a couple pairs of Nikon and Alpen binos that arent low dispersion glass, but are otherwise pretty decent quality.  The difference in brightness and lack of chromatic aberration is quite noticeable with these, so Im very happy with them, and the price was right.  Theyre solid and well made, focus very smoothly, and I like the way Vortex stands behind them with their lifetime guarantee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handle Beautifully First impressions are very favorable. The lens handle beautifully, and the images are very clear. Love the feel and texture in the hands. Looking forward to giving them more field work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money I was using a $150 pair of Eagle Optics (Denali) for years and the difference in quality and color and clarity with these binoculars is outstanding. I am completely satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bright, clear view! Fabulous for birding and all wildlife, really.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than previous I like Vortex, so I was curious if shifting production from Japan to China would result in a worse quality of a "new" product. First of all, I have to say that the Japanese have built a brand new factory in China, and the leading staff are Japanese. Nor was there any change in the output quality control. To compare the "Made in Japan" and "Made in China" versions, I had to borrow the Japanese version from my colleague. The size and weight remained roughly the same, the new version may still be slightly smaller. But what is most important? In my opinion, brightness, purity and sharpness are at the same level, but the field of view is broader at first glance at the new version. I did not see anything better in the 8x42 binoculars category (even in a higher price category). Definitely recommend this Vortex binocular regardless of the fact that it was made in China. The fantastic lifetime warranty has stayed and, in addition, you will get great GlassPak as a bonus.

Asked by: JAMES W
This new model has a reduced eye relief of 18mm from 20mm. I find that 18mm is the absolute minimum acceptable with eyeglasses for an 8x42. I find some edge loss with these, but it is acceptable. 19mm would be better. I also have Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 which have 19.5mm eye relief and they are excellent with eyeglasses, no loss of field. The advantage with the new Vipers is the much wider field of view, even with eyeglasses! Therefore easier to find your target. The Vortex Diamondback HD are very nice but only 17mm eye relief therefore more loss of field of view.

Are the pictures here of the new 2018 version or the old version ? It doesn't look like the 2018 version.
Asked by: Anonymous
(as of March 2019) I agree that the item pictured appears to be the old version. They may eventually change the pictures and make my comments obsolete, but as I'm writing this the picture for the 10x50 version shows how the focus ring, eye cups, and markings look for the new 2018 version that I just purchased, the other three sizes appear to be the old version.

Does this item come with the Vortex VIP lifetime warranty?
Asked by: Sean R.
Yes they come with the warranty. I actually had a hard time getting them to focus on a object, then i would get them dialed in and look at a different target and would have to readjust every time. So i sent them back to vortex and they fixed them at no cost and work perfect now. Hope this helps!
