Top ranking choices for B&H customers who searched for arrays

Add the capabilities of Thunderbolt 2 speed and storage to your Windows or Mac system with the ThunderBay 4 Hard Drive Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing. This is a four bay, SATA III 6 Gb/s enclosure and each bay will support a 3.5" hard drive or a 2.5" hard drive or SSD. Each 2.5" drive requires an optional NewerTech AdaptaDrive adapter. Once drives are installed, you can RAID them using the software RAID of your choice to setup the ThunderBay 4 for multi-drive performance or data redundancy.

The ThunderBay 4 will provide you with plenty of space to store files such as music, photos, movies, and documents. It also allows you to operate a production workflow with 2K and 4K video in Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, and Avid Media Composer, audio in Avid Pro Tools and Logic Pro X, and photos in Adobe Photoshop, Apple Aperture and Adobe Lightroom. When configured as a RAID 0, this array features read speeds up to 859 MB/s and write speeds up to 838 MB/s.

The ThunderBay 4 comes with two Thunderbolt 2 ports that provide bi-directional data transfer rates of 20 Gb/s. Dual Thunderbolt 2 ports allow you to daisy-chain up to six devices such as additional ThunderBays, 4K displays, and more. To help ensure a smooth operating environment, the array uses a 92mm nosie-quieting fan. The ThunderBay 4 is compatible with Windows 7 SP1 and later and Mac OS 10.9 and later. It may be used as a boot drive On Mac systems, but does not support Boot Camp. It operates using a 100-240 VAC power supply that runs at 50/60 Hz. Included with this ThunderBay 4 array is a 3.3' / 1.0m Thunderbolt cable, an 3-prong power cable, 2 keys for the front panel lock, and a PC & Mac compatible software bundle. Please bear in mind that while users are free to select drives of their choice for this RAID, variable spin drives, such as WD Red and WD Green, are not recommended. The issue with variable spin drives is that because the drives could potentially be spinning at different speeds, this could lead to constant rebuilds within the RAID, as it could think that one or more drives are not in operation. While WD Red and WD Green drives are specifically being mentioned, please bear in mind that variable speed drives also manufactured by other companies, such as Seagate, are also not recommended.

"Great drive bay....Very nice raid array....I tape over the LEDs because they are a little bright for me - I recommend the SoftRaid software because it can test the drives while they are in the array (live) and inexpensively supports Raid 5 in a Mac environment....) Aside from that, the Thunderbolt connection is speedy enough... granted, the 7200rpm conventional drive isn't as fast as the SSD inside the macbook, but I keep my Lightroom Library file on the internal SSD, and the RAW files on the external drives - a little portable Seagate 4TB USB which I use on the road, and backup to bigger drives in this OWC unit when I'm at home."

"Thumbs up...Pros: 1....Once I started using their drives I have never had a problem, it is a very robust technology....Both the manufacturer and B&H listed the G-RAID system as having a transfer speed of up to 480 MB/s but when the drives arrived the box had a large orange sticker that listed the transfer speed as up to 330 MB/s. I called B&H to find out what was going on and while they were very helpful and courteous, they were not really able to answer the question."

Add the capabilities of Thunderbolt 2 speed and storage to your Mac with the ThunderBay 4 Four-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (RAID 5 Edition) from OWC / Other World Computing. This is a four bay, SATA III 6 Gb/s enclosure and each bay will support a 3.5" hard drive or a 2.5" hard drive or SSD. Each 2.5" drive requires an optional NewerTech AdaptaDrive adapter. Once drives are installed, you can RAID them via the included SoftRAID 5 for Thunderbay software. While this array is pre-configured as RAID 5, it also supports RAID 0, 1, 4, and 1+0. For those who do not require RAID support, this array may also be configured as a JBOD.

As this array comes configured as a RAID 5, it features read speeds up to 580 MB/s and write speeds up to 569 MB/s. RAID 5 helps to increase performance, while also reserving one of the drives for data redundancy. If reconfigured as a RAID 0, the ThunderBay 4 features read speeds up to 878 MB/s and write speeds up to 924 MB/s.

"Working fine with Mac Pro...Great Solution for Video Storage...This product is as easy and as good as it gets for a RAID storage solution for a Thunderbolt interface... Easy installations/access to hard drives... Easy connection to computer... Easy setup of RAID software...software not required if just using a JBOD configuration... Nice and quiet operation - no loud fan noise... Nothing bad to say about it......The MBP's Thunderbolt 2 ports make a Thunderbolt RAID attractive and the OWC empty 4 drive box is about as cheap a solution as one can find."

Designed for demanding applications and multi-stream HD, 2K, 4K, and HDR workflows, the G-RAID 8TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from G-Technology provides up to 8TB of enterprise-class storage that is made up of two 4TB 7200 rpm 3.5" hard drives and is equipped with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen 2) port, and one HDMI port. While one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports is used to interface with your host system at speeds of up to 440 MB/s, the other can be used to daisy chain up to five additional devices to your G-RAID. If your system doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, you can use the 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 port, while the HDMI port supports HDCP 2.2, HDR, and 4K/60 fps video passthrough. For those who wish to use this G-RAID with their USB Type-A system, a USB Type-C to Type-A cable is included that supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen 2), 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1), and 480 Mb/s USB 2.0.

The dual drive bays of this G-RAID support hardware-controlled RAID 0 and RAID 1. RAID 0 stripes the two drives together, providing enhanced read and write speeds, but no data redundancy, while RAID 1 mirrors the content of one drive to the other, providing 1:1 data redundancy at the cost of performance. For those who do not need the benefits of a RAID, JBOD is also supported.

The G-RAID 8TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array comes formatted for macOS 10.12+. After a simple reformat, it may also be used with Windows 8.1 and 10. Also included is a 20 Gb/s Thunderbolt cable, an AC power adapter, and a power cable. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

"Makes editing large ProRez files a breeze on my 2017 iMac....I highly recommend this enclosure if you have thunderbolt 3....A bit pricey, but still, a wonderful addition for my Mac Mini 2018....I'm using OpenZFS with the drives but a more mainstream solution that I also tested successfully is SoftRAID."

Add the speed and storage capabilities of RAID, Thunderbolt 2, and USB 3.0 to your Mac and Windows systems using the G-RAID 20TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array from G-Technology. This array features two SATA III 6 Gb/s drive bays, each of which holds one removable 10TB enterprise-class hard drive, for a total capacity of 20TB. The drives have a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and are configured in a RAID 0 array. Moreover, this G-RAID is outfitted with one USB 3.0 port along with two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which deliver daisy-chaining capabilities.

This G-RAID features an internal RAID controller which supports hardware RAID 0 (optimized for performance), RAID 1 (optimized for 1:1 data redundancy), or JBOD, with data transfer rates of up to 480 MB/s. This will allow users to access, browse, edit, and backup their digital library. It is well suited for demanding creative projects, such as those involving HD, 2K, and compressed 4K workflows. In addition, it may also be used for storage-intensive applications, such as audio editing, digital photography, music libraries, data backup, and more. This array uses a smart cooling fan to help ensure quiet operation, a long life, and data reliability, as well as an all-aluminum enclosure to help increase its durability.

While this G-RAID is compatible with both Mac and Windows, it comes pre-formatted HFS+ with Journaling for Mac OS 10.9 and later. It may also be reformatted for Windows and is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Included with this storage array are two Thunderbolt cables, a USB 3.0 cable, a power cable, and an AC power adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

"As fast as SSD's...High capacity and fast...Tried to do time machine backups of the 10TB drive on the 4 and 5TB externals and though it does work, it takes a couple of days to do a backup....Using this as a file server disk and it was easy to switch the drive to RAID1 so the information is on both disks (though that lowers the capacity to 10TB)."

Designed for demanding applications and multi-stream HD, 2K, 4K, and HDR workflows, the G-RAID 16TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from G-Technology provides up to 16TB of enterprise-class storage that is made up of two 8TB 7200 rpm 3.5" hard drives and is equipped with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen 2) port, and one HDMI port. While one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports is used to interface with your host system at speeds of up to 400 MB/s, the other can be used to daisy chain up to five additional devices to your G-RAID.

The G-RAID 16TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array comes formatted for macOS 10.12+. After a simple reformat, it may also be used with Windows 8.1 and 10. Also included is a 20 Gb/s Thunderbolt cable, an AC power adapter, and a power cable. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

Built to support for video workflows on location and in the studio that require large capacities, high-powered performance, and multiple RAID configurations for multi-stream 4K, 8K, and VR workflows, the G-SPEED Shuttle XL 24TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from G-Technology provides up to 24TB of enterprise-class storage that is made up of six 4TB 7200 rpm 3.5" hard drives and is equipped with two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports. While one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports is used to interface with your host system at speeds of up to 1500 MB/s, the other can be used to daisy chain up to five additional devices to your G-SPEED.

In addition to the six 3.5" drive bays, this array also has two Evolution (ev) Series drive bays that support ev Series drive modules. If there is data that needs to be copied off the array's 3.5" drives, it can be copied to the ev Series modules, which may then be removed from the array and transported or mailed with more ease than a 3.5" drive. ev Series modules can also be used to adapt memory cards, such as the RED MINI-MAG, so that content may be transferred to and from the array.

The six drive bays of the G-SPEED come pre-configured as hardware-controlled RAID 5, which provides a good balance of performance and data redundancy. Also supported is RAID 0, 1, 6, and 10. Please bear in mind that the ev Series drive bays may only be configured as RAID 0, 1, and JBOD.

The G-SPEED Shuttle XL 24TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array comes formatted for macOS 10.12+. After a simple reformat, it may also be used with Windows 10 and 7. Also included is a 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 cable, a power cord, and six removable disk modules, and two ev Series bay adapters. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

"Highly recommended!...Great stuff so far !...My initial intent was to get a Synology, but this was a better price point and even if I get the Synology this still has a slot in the workflow....Wish it had a RJ-45 so it could be set up as NAS, but using USB on my fileserver and sharing it gives just as good a result."
