X121M Graduated Medium Gray G2 Filter

  • Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Cokin graduated gray ND filters are part clear, part neutral density. They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A ND.6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.

    X160 Top/Linear Polarizing Filter

  • Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. Filter factor is between 2.3 and 2.8 (approx. +1.3 stops). Linear polarizers are used with most manual focus cameras and are not recommended for auto-focus cameras.

NOTE: This kit does not contain a Cokin X-Pro adapter ring.

The Lee RF75 Digital Basic Filter Set contains three interesting filters which will definitely help the outdoor shooter.

0.6 Graduated Neutral Density Filter (Hard Edge)
Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.

0.6 Neutral Density ND (Pro Glass) Filter
Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

    81B Color Conversion Filter
It's Autumn. The clouds are low hanging and the sky is "patchy blue". You've gone for a ride upstate to the mountains and the light in open shade is bluish. A photo taken of your girlfriend with daylight balanced film leaning against the side of a barn will yield bluish tones that she might not find particularly flattering.

An 81B filter will replace even more yellow than an 81A and bring her skin tones back to a more appealing level. An 81B can also be used with electronic flash to reduce the amount of "blue" generated by the flash. The 81 series (81A, B, C, D and EF) allows you to choose how much warmth you wish to replace in the image.

The 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter from Tiffen offers a unique way of maintaining total control over your depth of field as well as presenting an efficient way to create some special effects. The filter is designed with a built-in rotating ring that controls neutral density ranging from 2 - 8 stops (0.6- 2.4). The heavier the density, the slower your shutter speed will be. This longer exposure allows the shutter to remain open long enough to record the same amount of light but will also create movement within the shot. Another major benefit of this filter is the elimination of having to buy and carry around individual neutral density filters. With this one filter, you can rotate to the degree of ND you want - a real time and money saver.

Simply mount the filter on your lens, set it to "Min" density then frame and focus. Care must be taken with focusing at heavier densities to make sure focus is accurate. However, if it isn't, switch to manual focus and rotate to the desired degree of filtration.

For example, if your standard exposure without the filter is 1/500 @ f/8 and you then set the filter to "Min", you change the shutter speed to 1/125 at the same aperture - thereby losing 2 stops of speed while gaining a hint of "blur" in the image. If that's not enough filtration, continue rotating the filter until you reach the shutter speed you desire. Using the above example, you can even get down to 1/2 second @ f/8 (8 stops). It should be noted that the calibration marks on the filter ring are to be used only for reference and should not be regarded as accurate settings for specific densities.

A Neutral Density filter is used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And, since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration.

"OH WOW...love it...By using this product with my Rokinon DS line of lens I got to say the filter work great l, just don't close it to the maximum or you will get a little be of vignette, the The color chiefs as minimum, lastly I like the fact that I don't have to be changing filter I mount this variable version and just have to use it like if is my aperture ring....As a photographer, it's very helpful in allowing action blur in bright environments, it's also great because I can use a larger aperture when I am shooting in a bright environment in which I have little control of how bright the surroundings are."

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

This UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

"The best...Worth it...Having spent $400 on the Canon mid level nifty fifty, I thought spending a fewextra dollars on the B & W 58mm MRC uv filter would be a good idea given theoverwhelmingly positive reviews I have seen on @and B & H. I'm glad I did! This filter oozes quality from the hefty feel to the silky smooth brass threads thatscrew on effortlessly!...I own a number of B + W filters, and I've never had anything negative to say about them, but the stock photos shown an B&H make thist look more like a neutral density filter, and I really wanted optically clear."

    B&H # BWUVXSP77 MFR # 66-1066125

The B+W 77mm XS-Pro UV Haze MRC-Nano 010M Filter is a general use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created, and adjustments to exposure are not required while using this filter. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.8% light transmission, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention. To further reduce the possibility of vignetting when this filter is in use, the filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size. This may prevent the use of some lens manufacturer bayonet hoods.

This UV Haze filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

"On time...Best UV...It is housed in a super thin ring so vignetting is a non-issue, it has no noticeable effect on exposure / f-stop, and interestingly the first time I mounted it on the camera I accidentally dropped it on a hard case and not a speck of dirt or dust, leave alone a scratch !!...flare and haze, the nano coating makes it easier to clean and less likely to get dirt stuck to it, I use filters mostly for protection anyways, so I like filters that don't really effect the image, and this one doesn't as UV Haze don't in general, it's pricey but built better and will seem to last a lot longer than other filters."

"Good UV...The Best...I have been a Nikon photographer for more than 50 years and always remember that a top-quality filter is as important as the lens....I want to protect the front element of my expensive lenses, and a high quality filter such as this doesn't cause any loss of quality, at least from the research and personal experience I have."

Tiffen 77mm Circular Polarizer Filters - Light rays which are reflected become polarized.

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.

"It's OK...It work...I like it, as far a people saying once the filter is on its tough to turn off, I think there might be some over tightening issues as I have not experienced any such problems yet....i've been shooting for years, and until I photographed a city through tinted car windows, I didn't realize how useful a filter like this could be!"
