Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 Overview

  • 1Description

Well-suited for subjects ranging from portraits to wildlife, the AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED from Nikon is an 82.5-300mm-equivalent telephoto zoom for DX-format cameras. The versatile range of long focal lengths is ideal for isolating subjects and homing-in on distant scenes. One extra-low dispersion element is used to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range, for greater clarity, and a Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast. A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops.

Telephoto zoom is designed for DX-format F-mount cameras and provides an 82.5-300mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by three stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 Reviews

    AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 834.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lens hood The lens itself is fine, but i dont know why is the lens hood so loose, it doesnt even locking. A soft touch can remove the lens hood from the lens. Is it because it was made in China?!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet Lens !!! I really like this lens. My first DSLR was Nikon D60 kit with the Nikkor 18-55mm VR and the Nikkor 55-200mm VR. I have shot quite a few portraits using the 55-200mm. I will say that not all Nikon 55-200 lenses are the same. This is MFR# 2166. It is an IF (Internal Focus) lens. The optics are wonderful. Even though I have the Nikkor 55-300mm lens, I still love this lens, so I bought another one to keep at my other house. I replicate some of my equipment (cameras, lenses, and light gear) so that I don't have to carry it back and forth. DX gear is fairly inexpensive to duplicate, so I only carry a limited of FX gear when I travel back and forth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it This was an Xmas present for my wife. She absolutely loves the lens. It was a replacement from her old one. Couldn't be happier with ease of website and the shipping was fast and reliable

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Camera Must Buy One word description: amazing. That's been my experience so far. I'm an automotive photographer, and sometimes it's hard to get close to the cars I'm trying to take a picture of. An 18-55mm lens works, but when I need zoom, I have this 55-200mm lens to cover me. I honestly don't know what I'd do without it. There are a couple flaws, however. It is bulky and somewhat weighty. Not much you can do about that, though, and it's not that bad. It makes a high pitched noise, which I assume is the VR. Again, not much of a problem. So far, best camera purchase I've made.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens Perfect for landscape photography. B&H prices are the lowest I could find, and they are very helpful on the phone with questions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens This is a great lens for every day photography. Times when I am not sure if I will use a zoom or not. Focus time is decent as well. I will get much use out of this lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good enough I've only used this coupled with a D3000 and D3300. The autofocus leave a little bit to be desired, but the VR is about what I'd expect from this class of lens. Overall, a decent purchase. You're getting about what you pay for. The biggest downside is that the focus ring is not available when you have the lens hood mounted backward for storage.

    question

Is this compatible with my Nikon D60 ?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Hi Christian, this lens requires a f mount camera. I took a quick look at the specs of d60 and it seems like it would work. I bought this lens as a gift. It works well for the camera used. As I'm a Canon guy I don't know Nikon products as well. Hope that helps.

    question

Good MorningI want to know if this lens is used for the D3300 and if you recommend this lens is good?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Yes; the Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens is fully compatible for use with the Nikon D3300 DSLR camera, as it is the lens that is typically included by Nikon in the Nikon D3300 2-Lens Kit. The Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens is a decent lens and a good complement to the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens included with the camera, which would give you a total range of 18-200mm with the two lenses.

While it is one of the quietest options for a lens, there are still very subtle mechanical sounds when using continuous autofocus.
