Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens from Nikon is a versatile, lightweight telephoto zoom lens that has been designed to meet the demands of both digital and 35mm format SLR users. It offers a 4.3x zoom with a focal length range of 70-300mm and a 35mm equivalency of 105-450mm when used on DX-format DSLRs. With two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and Super Integrated Lens Coating to minimize ghosting and flare, the optical performance of this wide-ranging telephoto zoom is up to the task of wildlife, travel, well-lit sports and general photography applications.

Incorporating Nikon's second-generation Vibration Reduction (VR II) system enables flexible hand-held shooting by stabilizing the image to compensate for the blur caused by camera shake. This provides the equivalence of 2.5 shutter speed stops to help in capturing sharper images in low light or at extended zoom lengths. The Silent Wave Motor and Internal Focusing system provide fast and quiet auto focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.

Versatile Telephoto Zoom
A lightweight telephoto zoom for FX format DSLRs provides extensive reach to magnify distance subjects. When used on a DX-format DSLR, its 35mm focal length equivalence is 105-450mm.
Silent Wave Motor
The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables quiet auto focusing with quick and convenient switching between auto focus and manual operation.
Internal Focusing
The Internal Focusing (IF) design for a fixed lens length and non-rotating front element allows the use of circular polarizing filters and lens-mounted flash accessories.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 2.5 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible for sharper still images and video capture.
Extra-Low Dispersion Glass
Two ED glass elements minimize chromatic aberration across the entire zoom range while ensuring high resolution and contrast.
Super Integrated Lens Coating
Nikon's proprietary lens coating improves light transmission, reducing ghosting and flare.
Rounded Diaphragm
9-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend together smoothly for natural-looking backgrounds.

    Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Reviews

    AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 1026.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from love it it's one of the best lenses on market

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens for the money Not bad for a relatively inexpensive lens. It was forward focusing a bit, so I had slightly blurry images. The Nikon D750 has an auto focus tuning routine in the menu, which seemed to take care of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Try it you will like it. I haven't had a long time with this lenses, but it seems for the money I am going to be very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for the backyard photographer! Great amateur telephoto lens. It's exactly what I wanted!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I bought this lense again and would so another time, too! This is my go to lens for standard to telephoto photos. It is lightweight, good speed, and takes sharp photos. For its price and weight, it cannot be beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great zoom Great tack sharp lens that's light weight and 100mm longer reach then the usual 70-200mm variety. This lens is easy to pack in my bag and carry around on long trips. This lens is more of a daylight use due to the minimum f/4.5 stop, but the price cannot be beat unless you must have a zoom with a minimum f/2.5 stop. Therefore, you will not be sorry to add this lens as part of your camera equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens! It has exceeded my expectations! I needed a telephoto lens to photograph swimmers. I found the sharpness and speed of focus excellent. It is relatively compact for the reach and gives a great boquet for portraits and close-ups. For the price a really sweet lens.

what is the difference between VR and VR2? and how to spot the difference?
    Asked by: Mostafa A.
The Nikon VR II offers an increase of stabilization up to 4 stops compared to the original VR which stabilized only up to 3 stops. Most of the current Nikon lenses with VR have the newest version of this feature.

I have a read up on this lens versus the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD and it seems that the consensus is that the Tamron shoots sharper images at the longer end and is also quieter. Can anyone contribute their knowledge to the comparison of these two lenses?
    Asked by: Leslie W.
The degree of sharpness and performance will depend on the camera you plan to use this lens with. You can do an in-depth, side by side comparison of these lenses on your camera at

what is the difference between active and normal on the lens
    Asked by: Anonymous
Active vs. normal is a reference to the Vibration Reduction feature of the Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED lens. Active mode effectively compensates image blur caused when shooting from a moving vehicle, or some other unstable position, providing stable viewfinder images and blur-corrected captured images, whereas normal VR is more suitable for general use and camera shake.
