Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 Overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens is a far-reaching telephoto zoom lens that features Vibration Reduction to reduce the effects of camera shake at longer focal lengths or with slower shutter speeds. The lens is designed for FX-format cameras and features an aperture range from f/4.5 to f/32. Lens construction includes three extra-low dispersion glass elements for control over aberrations and improved contrast and resolution. Additionally, this lens does feature an autofocus motor.

The lens also has a minimum focus distance of 7.5' and comes with a detachable, rotatable tripod collar for mounting when necessary. For smooth out-of-focus elements the lens uses 9 rounded aperture blades. Also, it features a 77mm filter thread.

Nikon D-type lenses transmit subject-to-camera distance information to the camera. The camera uses this distance information to refine its exposure calculations. AF not supported by D40, D60, D3000 & D5000 cameras.

Two Vibration Reduction modes are available one for both the viewfinder image and the image on film or sensor and a VR for the film or sensor only for power savings.
New optical design incorporates three ED glass elements for superior optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Built-in A/M switch enables instant switching from autofocus to manual focus (lock mechanism provided).
Focus range limiter for smooth focus operation.
Detachable tripod mounting foot provided.
Filter attachment does not rotate during focusing or zooming.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens if you know its weaknesses This is a great lens if you know its strengths and weaknesses, and use it accordingly. The image quality of the lens is quite good up to 300mm. It then starts to degrade, and is noticebly soft at the edges above 350mm when used with an FX sensor based DSLR. Nevertheless, if the subject is primarily in the center of the frame, the quality of the image will be high. Moreover, while Nikkor lenses, such as the 200-400mm f/4 VRII are considerably better optically, at the price of this lens, it's really hard to complain with its build quality, and overall optical quality, even at 400mm. I have many high quality wildlife images using this lens at 400mm. The biggest problem with this lens is when used in lower light conditions, on low end DSLR's (which have focus motors) with few cross type focus sensors. This lens will tend to hunt for the focus point. With upper level Nikon DSLR's such as the D700 or D3S that problem diminishes, and with either the D800 or D4 it virtually goes away. If you keep these shortcomings in mind you can produce excellent images with this lens. On the plus side, this lens is great for travel considering its range of focal lengths, its weight, and compactness.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikkor 80-400mm Lens I'm using this on my D-300 and I am very pleased. After spending a day with it, using it on various wildlife (birds, dogs, deer, insects, etc., moving and stationary), landscapes (mountains, trees, buildings, etc.), and even photographing flying airplanes and the moon in a daytime sky, I was very pleased that vibration and stability was not a problem. I had read that some consider this a very unstable lens without a mount, especially in the higher zoom registers, but I have not yet used a tripod nor a bipod and have experienced no blurring, etc., from movement. I'm sure that low-light situations will prove otherwise, but this is true with lower power zooms as well and you should always use a mount in these situations. This lens is easy to use and just plain fun. Don't misunderstand, this is a big lens, especially with the hood attached, but this lens serves a purpose: to bring you in close, very close. This lens does that extremely well and is lighter than you would imagine. No reason here to discuss the quality of the glass... typical Nikkor, clear, bright, no aberation, etc. Focus is fast and easy. I bumped the lens on a big rock on a hike and no damage resulted; very durable. No lens creep so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than Epected I had read many reviews of this lens and had determined that for my experience level and my fiscal constraints this lens would certainly enhance my photographic experience. Most of the reviewers commented on the speed or lack thereof of this lens. I found that the speed exceeded my expectations gained from the reviews. Many reviewers also commented on the amount of time to focus as well as the hunting. I have found that it focuses faster than my previous lens and with less hunting. While the lens is undoubtedly not professional quality where speed and focus time are concerned, it certainly is more than capable of capturing dynamic images under proper conditions. I am using the lens for nature photography and have been impressed with my ability to get quality shots while not disturbing my subject matter which more often than not is a small bird.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great I purchased this lens primarily for outdoor use with birds and wildlife and find it to be excellent for that purpose. The VR works fine and allows the lens to be hand held even at 400mm in most outdoor conditions (including dark overcast days). The extra focal length is really great for many subjects. This lens uses the older mechanical focusing system. For my use, I did not find the slightly slower AF to be an issue at all. Those trying to shoot fast moving sports events or birds in flight may have a different judgement and want to consider the much more expensive G version, but for me this lens works nicely and was a real bargain. The only drawbacks are those that would be associated with any long lens, namely (1) it is fairly heavy / bulky so taking it along on a photo outing is not a casual choice, and (2) as with any long lens, the DOF is quite shallow. Overall I am extremely pleased with the mechanical and optical quality of this lens.

    question

Is there a notable difference between the Imported and USA versions?
    Asked by: Anonymous
There is no difference between the Imported and USA versions of this lens other than the warranty. A USA lens has a USA manufacturer's warranty, whereas an Imported version of a lens has a warranty provided through B&H which covers the same provisions of a manufacturer's warranty, and will last one year.

The AF 80-400mm lens will be fully compatible with the D7000, including autofocus. The lens can also be used on the D5200, though autofocus will not be retained. You will need to manually focus the lens on the D5200.

    question

With this lens is the motor in the lens or camera. I have a D800
    Asked by: Anonymous
The Nikon AF 80-400mm lens does not have a built-in motor for focus. So, autofocus would be driven by the D800s built in AF motor.

    question

does this lens work in autofocus with the D5100 camera?
    Asked by: Anonymous
The (recently discontinued) Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f\/4.5-5.6D ED Lens (B&H # NI8040045AF) would physically fit onto the Nikon D5100 DSLR camera, but as the lens does not have its own internal AF-S Silent Wave Motor for focusing, you would have to focus the lens manually when using the lens on the Nikon D5300. However, do note the new, current Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f\/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens (B&H # NI8040045GED) does have the AF-S motor and is fully compatible with the Nikon D5100 DSLR camera, including autofocus capabilities.
