Choosing Wired Microphones
Wired microphones absorb sound waves and convert them into electrical impulses for further amplification through speakers. Since they're physically connected to the amplifier or recorder, they don't have any interference with your sound frequency. Even better, they don't need batteries, as they have a direct link to the power source.
Location Sound Microphone Types
Shotgun microphones have a tight pickup area at the front, to ensure sound is isolated from background noise. They're also integrated with shock mounts to prevent bumps and vibrations which could interfere with your sound. Shotgun mics are unidirectional and pick up the best sound from the front, making them ideal for situations that don't require a lot of movement, such as lectures and school presentations.
Lavalier microphones are great for almost all social media audio recording needs, as they're compatible with smartphones, computers, and DSLR cameras. Lav mics also allow you to move your hands freely while presenting, which is important during demonstrations.
For dynamic broadcasting, consider handheld interview microphones that capture sound in a 360° radius, allowing easy handling of the mic while still capturing perfect audio. These handheld microphones have mesh heads that act as windscreens, and contain internal plosive screens that work well during interviews.
Stereo and specialty mics can handle high sound pressure, and deliver superior sound thanks to dual microphones that work simultaneously to record one sound input.
Directional or Omnidirectional?
Choose directional microphones if you plan to use your mic when the sound will come from a specific direction. For best results, you should speak on the voice side of the microphone, as this is the only area that will pick up proper sound. Choose these for activities such as:
- Sports commentating
- News broadcasting
- Audio recording
Omnidirectional microphones are able to pick up sound with equal gain from all sides. This makes them flexible for a range of tasks, including:
- Musical performances
- Product demonstrations
- Conference calls
