Choosing Leica M Series Cameras

Leica M series cameras are mirrorless rangefinder cameras fitted with Leica’s tried-and-tested M mount system. These cameras feature a minimalist design that emphasizes function over form. The compact size of M series Leica digital cameras makes them among the smallest interchangeable lens digital cameras on the market. Despite their small size, M series cameras have a full-frame, 24 MP CMOS sensor.

What's a Rangefinder Camera?

A rangefinder camera uses a separate optical viewfinder with a field of view that matches that of the lens. The term “rangefinder” refers to how the camera focuses. When you look through the viewfinder, you’ll see a blurred double image. This is because there’s a small prism linked to the lens focus mechanism that superimposes a second image onto the viewfinder. As you focus the lens, a cam turns the prism until the two images align, which is at the point of focus.

Features of Leica Digital Rangefinder Cameras

The size and shape of the Leica M camera hails back to the original Leica M film camera introduced in 1954, with the initial M bayonet mount that’s still in use. These cameras have a solid build with a brass frame and metal lens mounts. Aperture controls are on the lenses, and all lenses focus manually. Basic M series cameras have only a shutter speed dial, ISO adjustment, and viewfinder, similar to Leica M series film cameras. Other models incorporate features such as a live view LCD screen, Wi-Fi compatibility, and HD video recording.

Leica M Camera Lenses

Because the bayonet lens mount remains unchanged, virtually all M mount lenses are compatible, as well as M mount lenses from third-party manufacturers. Standard Leica M series lenses range from 16mm wide-angle lenses to standard 50mm lenses, and extend to 135mm medium telephoto lens. Lenses incorporate Leica’s six-bit barcode that allows Leica rangefinder cameras to detect their focal length and to illuminate the appropriate bright line lens frame in the viewfinder. It’s also possible to enter the lens focal length manually for lenses without a barcode.

Leica M Series Accessories

There’s a wide selection of Leica M series camera accessories available. These include cases, camera protectors, and straps. A full range of diopter correction lenses allow you to use the camera while wearing glasses. Additionally, there are several clip-on optical and digital viewfinders for specific focal lengths not covered by the range of standard bright line frames in the viewfinder. Other useful Leica M series lens accessories include a variety of lens filters, lens caps, and lens hoods. Also available are lens adapters for L series lenses, as well as special adapters that provide macro capabilities for most lenses.

Take your photography to the next level with Leica M digital cameras. B&H Photo and Video stocks a wide selection of M series cameras, lenses, and accessories.
