Learning About Tripod Arms
Tripod arms screw into the top of a tripod to provide additional reach for photo and video equipment. One end of the tripod extension arm holds the tripod head and the other end may hold counterweights to level the arm. Generally, you use counterweights when the camera and tripod head are too heavy, in order to get proper balance and to level out the system to prevent possible equipment damage. Using camera and tripod levelers such as bases, adapters, and bubble levels helps you properly level extension arms and tripods.

Once you lock the camera onto the tripod extension arm, it'll stay in position until you move the tripod or arm.
