Home Theater for the Holidays

By Michael Antonoff

Like holiday dinner, you can shop for each course separately and do the cooking yourself, or you can order the complete meal, ready to be heated and served. To streamline the chore of shopping for a home theater, B&H has selected two complete systems ready to be connected and turned on. These are no ordinary systems. They're each built around a full 1080p flat-screen display, the ultimate in HDTV resolution. They each come with an amazing sound system, a Blu-ray Disc player, prime accessories, and all the cables you'll need.

The major difference between the two systems is that one features a plasma TV and the other LCD. The plasma is the Panasonic TH-50PZ700U, named this fall by a classy advertising-free consumer magazine as the best flatscreen it ever tested. The 50-inch 1920 by 1080p display is only 5.5-inches deep. The LCD is the Sony KDL-46V3000 BRAVIA. The 46-inch 1920 by 1080p panel is only 4.8-inches deep.

We've carefully chosen the main components to complete each system. For audio that means the Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with dual HDMI inputs and the JBL Cinema Sound CS6100 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System. The plasma package contains the Panasonic DMP-BD10A Blu-ray Disc Player; the LCD system, the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disk Player.

These soup-to-nuts systems also come with a power conditioner and a universal remote control. For the plasma, it's the Monster 10-outlet HTS 2600 MKII Reference PowerCenter with Clean Power Stage and the Universal Remote MX-350 Osiris easy-to-use advanced universal remote. For the LCD, it's the APC H10 Home Theater Power Conditioner and the Logitech Harmony H880 Remote Control. For each system you also get two HDMI cables, 100-feet of speaker wire, a subwoofer cable, and last (but not least) the adjustable Sanus VisionMount TV Wall Mount VMAA26b with an extendible hinged arm. How's that for off-the-wall viewing?

Each total plasma or LCD package represents a more than $500 savings versus buying the parts separately. On top of that savings, you'll also get five free high definition movies on Blu-ray discs. (Your Blu-ray player also plays DVDs.)

So, isn't it time you treated you and your family to the luxury of a full 1080p display with digital surround sound?
