question
How can I plug into this if I'm coming from a digital optical audio output?
I looked into using these for surround sound and it turned out that I'd need a pretty expensive AV receiver that can split down the digital optical signal into its line components (L, R, C, rL, rR, Sub). So, an intermediary 'mixer' is required to decode the digital signal and split it down. The input to the speaker is line-signal (TRS, XLR)

Yes

question
What is the country of origin of this speaker?
I don't the manufacturing location; but . . . I would want to know, that . . . the built-in volume cut-off, wherein the speakers turn off when there is an extended period of low volume, is a freaking pain in the butt. I hate that flaw, not feature. If you buy them, and you use them at a level I'd compare to comfortable radio listening, you'll wish you had gone with a different brand, because you'll find yourself reaching for the volume knob, turning it to 11 so the speakers can turn back on , every 5 minutes. For that, they suck. Sound? Perfect.
