Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Overview

By B&H Photo's

Have all the essential focal lengths covered with this E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens from Sony. Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this lens offers an extremely versatile 27-157.5mm zoom range and has a constant f/4 aperture for consistency through all focal lengths. Making this lens a great choice for both stills and video is the implementation of a power zoom mechanism and Handycam technology that provides smooth, quiet zooming and focusing. Also, it uses two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements to combat aberrations for crisp, clean images.

On top of these features, the lens is equipped with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to help reduce the effects of camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths. The lens benefits from an internal focus design that ensures that the overall length of the lens does not change during focusing. Additionally, it offers a minimum focus distance of 1.5' and uses a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

A versatile mid-range zoom for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 18-105mm lens provides a wide-angle to short telephoto 27-157.5mm equivalent focal length that works for anything from vast landscapes to tight portraits to distant subjects.
A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Three aspherical elements, including one Advanced Aspherical (AA), are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
Enjoy smooth zooms ideal for shooting movies with the power zoom mechanism which uses Handycam technology from Sony's well-regarded camcorders.
An internal focus design contributes to fast autofocus speeds and the minimum focus distance of 1.5' and easier handling as the lens maintains its overall length.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Gets the Job Done

The lens is not full frame but it gets the job done. If you want to go with a full frame PZ lens in similar specs you have to go with a much more expensive model.

Great All-rounder lens

It's a kit lens, so don't expect the best - however, it excels at what it's made to do, cover a long zoom range at a reasonable f-stop. Keeping a constant F/4 throughout the entire zoom range is fantastic, especially when using this lens in a live production situation. It's my primary lens for my FS5. Zoom is very smooth, when controlled either with the rocker on the lens barrel or a LANC controller. Housing is made of metal, and it feels pretty rugged - but it's not super heavy like some Canon L series lenses. My only gripe is that there's no feedback whatsoever when you focus - the focus and zoom rings are electronic controls for the focus and zoom, so there's no way to see or feel when you've gone as far as the lens can go. However, this is a minor issue, and if you rely on power zoom and autofocus it doesn't matter at all. Lens is a good size - not too bulky, but not too small to look stupid on something like an FS5. I intend to pick up an FX30 soon and will likely grab another one of these for that camera too. The power zoom function DOES work with older Sony cinema cameras with zoom rockers like the FS700. I haven't tested others like the FS100 or A series mirrorless cameras. All in all, this is a solid lens and is a great bang for the buck. A great choice for live production since the only other option is the 28-135 which is more than double the price of this guy. Remember, this is NOT a full frame lens - only supports APS-C/Super 35 sensors.

Solid optics, very useful range

I've been shooting with this lens for the past 7 years. I had a Canon 5D2 at the time with 16-35 f2.8 L, 70-200 f2.8 IS, and some primes, but it was too big and heavy for a lot of occasions. I ended missing shots on occasions when I left part of my kit behind, or I didn't bring it at all. I bought this lens + Sony 10-18 f4 and A6000 with the purpose of taking it on hikes or other outdoor activities, traveling, or going out. This lens has fulfilled it's purpose very well. Combined with a wide angle lens, it covers the majority of my shooting needs. Because of the large range I've also been able to grab more shots and squeeze out a lot more different compositions during the few short minutes of sunset. The lens is sharp across the frame at f6.3-f8 throughout most of it's range. It's not as sharp as a premium lens, but I have no real complaints there. It's just ok at it's widest apertures and focal lengths. If I had to do it over with the choices available today, I'd probably pick the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 for it's superior optics but it's another 100 grams heavier and about 2x what I paid for this lens. The Sigma 18-50 f2.8 is cheap, light, small, and has excellent optics but just a bit short at 50mm without carrying an additional, longer lens.

Great Travel Lens

Just a photo hobbyist with a Sony a6000 looking for one lens to take on travels. This fits the bill. It would be better if f 2.8 but then I would have to pay a lot more. This lens does all I need and I do not have to take a bunch of equipment.

The perfect lens!

A very well made lens for travel photo and video. I love the fact that when zooming, the lens maintains its length.

Is this lens still good for video in comparison to the newer sigma 18-50, sony 16-55 and Tamron 17-70?
Asked by: Brett
The Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens is a great lens for video as it covers wider focal length and offers a constant f/4 aperture. However for low lights situations, a f/2.8 lens might be more useful.
