Suitable for distant subject matter, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is an 88-400mm-equivalent zoom for Canon APS-C DSLRs. This lens's long reach is enhanced by the inclusion of an Ultra-Low Dispersion element, which helps to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for greater clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating is also featured, and minimizes flare and ghosting in order to produce greater contrast when working in bright lighting conditions. Benefitting both photo and video applications, an STM stepping AF motor is used to realize quick and near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system is also featured and minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Reviews
Small but powerful
This is a small but powerful lens. I love the range it has. I use it often when my more powerful professional telephoto lens is not practical. Quite a bargain.
Surprisingly good quality at the price
Like other reviewers, I had a Tamron lens that was older (2009) and lacked clarity, particularly when zooming in or cropping. It also made way too much noise and slow when autofocusing. Enter the Canon. It was so fast and quiet that I didn't realize it was already focused. And the quality is great - I backed off the ISO and the details just popped. Didn't happen with the Tamron. In the images below, I was actually shooting through (clean) window glass and it still had great resolution on the feathers. Looking forward to using this on an upcoming trip - very happy with this and my previous Canon lens purchase of a wide angle for my 80D. B&H is fantastic, items always quickly shipped and well packed - never have to worry no matter how careless the delivery agent is.
Nice lens for the money
I bought my sometime ago and have been pleased with the results. One off the things I like, and convinced to buy it is the f 4-5.6 speed. It’s a must on my RP.
Great for a novice like me
I'm no pro, I shoot wildlife and landscapes as a hobby (I don't even post any of it, it's just for me and my supportive mates) and this lens gives me plenty of zoom and clarity for my purposes. The auto focus is smooth and quiet but the shutter is a bit loud. In the woods I shoot in, the longest shot I get is about 30 yards and this lens is good enough. A pro will want something better but the hobbyist should be happy with it, especially considering how affordable it is.
Great replacement for an older one
I wasn't pleased with my older EF-S 55-250 and could not achieve clearly focused images any longer. So I purchased this new one and am really glad I did. The AF seems faster, almost not aware that it focused, yet it's very clear! The movement is not pronounced. It's light weight to carry in my bag with other lenses. I'm happy with my purchase.
great less expensive lense
I have a 100-400L in a large format camera. This was for my wife as it is a lot lighter and about equal to my set up on her small APS camera. I must admit I am a little jealous as her set up is supper light and takes almost as good of a shot as mine, plus its much cheaper! But don't tell her!
Great Lens
Love it. For the price you can't beat it.
Perfect
I lost my mid-distance lens which came with my camera and part of me is glad I did now, this works perfectly with my Canon T7. I went to the park and tested it in various modes and I was amazed at the clarity and how well it auto-focused.
