Telephoto zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and provides an 88-400mm equivalent focal length range.
One Ultra-Low Dispersion glass element noticeably reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
Enhanced lens coatings minimize flare and ghosting in order to produce true colors with maintained contrast.
An STM stepping AF motor realizes smooth, near-silent autofocus that is complemented by a rear focus system, advanced AF algorithms, and a high-speed CPU for fast AF performance. Additionally, full-time manual focus override is also available.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Reviews

great less expensive lense

I have a 100-400L in a large format camera. This was for my wife as it is a lot lighter and about equal to my set up on her small APS camera. I must admit I am a little jealous as her set up is supper light and takes almost as good of a shot as mine, plus its much cheaper! But don't tell her!

Early days yet, but everything seems fine

The lens works well with my (15-year-old?) Canon Rebel Xsi. The zoom extends in and out smoothly, the AF capability is excellent, and the pictures I have taken to date, within the limitations of my modest skills as photographer, are great. I like the light weight of the lens. My only real complaint--and this is not really the fault of the lens--is that the lens cap comes off too easily.

Kit lens or not, this is a great lens

I have always dismissed basic kit lenses as silly but lately I have had to adjust my attitude. This is not the most amazing, mind blowing lens ever made but it is a good, honest lens. My game plan for years has been to buy only the best, most expensive lenses - disregarding any of the cheaper lenses. But sometimes (not always for sure) you can find a really good lens for good value. This 55-250mm is now part of my new strategy of experimenting and learning with less expensive but still good quality lenses. And I bought mine used from B&H, it works great!

Great Beginner Lens

A compact high-quality lens fit for most photographers who don't yet want to spend 2,500 on some plastic and glass for an already pricey camera body. Picking up a lens hood is recommended to reduce flaring, haze, and feathering while offering protection from collisions. The Canon ET-63 at $25 fits perfectly with no vignetting. Pros: -Quick Autofocus -Built-in Image Stabilization -Decent focal range for $300 -Small light and compact -Durable Cons: -Large F-Stop numbers (Average for the price) -Not as sharp as I would like, but unnoticeable unless you zoom and stare at it Overall, a balance of price and functionality, affordable for most photographers. Good to keep around as a small and light alternative to something you may pick up later, the next best Canon EF-Mount lens being Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L at 8x the price.

I have several L lenses but wanted something light for my wife so she could do animal shots with me. I am pleased with the size and light weight of the lens but am blown away with the versatility and sharpness of it. I'm almost jealous of her lens for more than a thousand cheaper!

Good medium telephoto lens

Solid telephoto lens for the price. Photo noise is more prominent when the lens is extended to its max zoom and f-stop.

question

Will a 1.4 telextender work with this lens?
Asked by: GORD
Sorry, no. Telextenders work best with extreme (expensive) telephoto primes with fast f/2.8 apertures. They cannot work with consumer lenses like this with an effective f/11 stop. If you try to mount this, the glass elements most likely will hit and damage each other. Even if you succeeded in mounting, the lens would be so dark, you could not focus and the image quality, sharpness wise, would be very poor.

Difference between import vs USA on lens
Asked by: Anonymous
USA means that the lens was sold within the US markets and carries a valid USA warranty. If the item is import/grey market, then the product was purchased outside of the US market and comes with a 1 year B&H warranty.

question

Is this an appropriate lense for model 50D?
Asked by: Anonymous
STM is the technology for the focusing motor and is compatible with all Canon EOS lenses. It is especially good with cameras that are used for video as it is almost silent (the focusing motor will not affect the sound), however it is nice to have on all cameras because it is so quiet. It will work fine on the 50D and be almost silent.
