XP PhotoGear XPMFP42 overview

  • 1Description

The XP PhotoGear 42mm MagFilter Circular Polarizer Filter is a unique filter and attachment system for use on compact cameras without front filter threads. The MagFilter system employs one thin adhesive metal ring, which is attached to the front of the camera lens, and then incorporates strong magnets into the filter ring itself for a seamless, non-threaded connection. This magnetic connection allows for the filter to be installed and removed quickly while the camera itself retains its thin original profile, even with the adhesive adapter ring attached.

The circular polarizer filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A circular polarizer differs from a linear polarizer in that it supports full use of a camera's autofocus and auto exposure functions. It is constructed from multi-layer coated optical glass and set in an anodized black and red metal filter ring.

Compatible Cameras

The adapter rings and circular polarizer filter have been tested to fit the following cameras:

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100, RX100 II, RX100 III, HX9V, HX20V, HX30V, and HX50V.

Magnetic Attachment Method

Unique and efficient magnetic attachment system for use on compact cameras featuring lenses without filter threads.
The included adhesive metal adapter rings have an outside diameter of 37mm and an internal diameter of 32mm.

Circular Polarizer Filter

Reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Lessens haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Multi-layer coated optical glass for maintained image quality.
Black and red-colored anodized metal ring provides durability and rigidity.

    XP PhotoGear XPMFP42 reviews

42mm MagFilter Circular Polarizer Filter is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great but can fall off I use this filter on a Sony RX100M3 and it works great. It was a bit tricky to put the supplied stick-on ring onto my camera and it ended up getting it installed a bit off centered, but it still works. I have not figured out a safe way to remove the steel ring. A cheap plastic guide would have been helpful. The filter itself is very well made, attractive and works great. It really does eliminate a lot of glare and enhances the sky. The filter can easily fall off when pocket carrying the camera (isn't this why we buy the RX100 series of cameras anyway?), but it does stay on when in my Lowepro Tahoe 30 or Ruggard Canis 50 pouches. The magnetic feature is very convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great accessories ND filter is not a polarizing filter, ND filter only to slow down the speed to capture slow action water falls and water movements. Polarizing filter is much brighter, and will reduce glare at an angle, but not working for 90% shooting. The sky, the reflective road surfaces, rooftiles, glass windows will look much better and the color will be more saturated. Lots of surfaces shown some reflective glare even not under the sun, so the glares will be greatly reduced by using polarizing filter. Please adjust the EV compensation to between + 1/2 to +1 EV to have the correct metering reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from yes, it does work great with an RX100M4 No vignetting. Compact solution. I wish they made a linear polarizer in this format. It turns smoothly on the magnetic mount, although, being of the circular type, rotation has no effect. Beware: the 52mm filter mount with a linear polarizer attached vignettes on an RX100M4. Because this has an integral mount, it fits closer to the lens, avoiding vignetting.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lost 2 now Great filter. ...but I’ve lost two now. Magnet is strong but filter can be dislodged when putting it away in a pocket or day pack. Needs a tether or other method to retain. I won’t be buying another. Nice idea but needs further work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am pleasantly surprised I am a relatively new photographer. Someone suggested I get a polarized lens for my camera to make the colors better. They suggested a certain one, at $400. No, I thought, let me google it. And this polarized lens came up at B&H Photo, at $40. I eagerly awaited its arrival. When I first tried it, I thought wow. Then I went to a park, with lots of colors. WOWSA! I am in love with my lens, my camera and being able to share my pictures with others. B&H Photo is now a favorite on my computer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice addition I use this Circular Polarizer on my Sony DSC-RX100 II. Works well. I'm pleased that the filter included two adhesive-backed metallic rings. That could be useful if I get another camera. The filter just clings immediately to the metallic ring mounted on the camera. Great solution. No one would even notice the metallic ring mounted on the camera unless pointed out. The filter came with a nice easy-to-use case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from CP Filter / Rx100 Vl The polarizer comes in a nice pouch with belt clip. Attachment of the lens ring with the adhesive was very easy. The filter snaps into place magnetically without any fumbling. When in use, rotating the CPF is easily done. I don't know how often it will be used but so far I like it. It comes with a extra lens ring .
