    Ricoh GH-3 reviews

GH-3 Hood & Adapter for Ricoh GR Digital Camera is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good hood, but a bit cumbersome. One of the charms of the Ricoh GR is its small size, coupled with a large (APS-C) sensor. The camera will easily slide into a jacket pocket, and even a well-sized shirt pocket. But not with the hood. Once the hood is attached, it feels like the camera doubles in size, although it's probably just twice as thick. The hood really doesn't weigh much at all, it just takes up room. However, I'm a firm believer in hoods, especially in places where you can get the sun shining on your lens. Some will satisfied just cupping their hand over the lens when necessary, but that does make shooting a two-handed operation. It's well-constructed, and attaches with secure bayonet mount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful Physical Protection This lens hood and adapter does increase the depth of the Ricoh GR/GR II significantly - a fact that makes the camera less pocketable. However, there are 2 main reasons I have them fitted on my GR II constantly, other than the desire to possibly increase contrast and reduce lens flare. They are - 1) To possibly help reduce the chance of dust finding it's way into the camera and onto the sensor. This camera has had some reported issues with dust on the sensor. A main cause of this is most likely the fact that it has a retractable lens - the extending and retracting movements act to draw dust inside over time. It has been suggested by some users that the addition of the hood and adapter around the lens may help to keep dust away from the outside of the lens assembly, and therefore slow it's passage to the interior. 2) In order to increase the response time of my GR II, when walking around with it, I keep it switched on, with the auto power off option switched to off, and the sleep time option set to 1 minute. I also switch the power button lamp off (all these options are in the setup menu). This way, when walking around, I can react more swiftly when wanting to take a shot. If no buttons on the camera are pressed for 1 minute, the LCD screen turns off, but the green focus lamp comes on as a visual alert that the camera is still on. Partially pressing the shutter button instantly illuminates the LCD screen, and the camera is ready to shoot. Not only is this faster than switching the camera on and waiting for it to power up, it also reduces the number of lens extensions and retractions, which hopefully lengthens the life of that assembly and (more importantly to me) discourages the ingress of dust into the body. As a result of the fact that I spend a lot of time walking around with the lens assembly extended, I wanted the adapter and hood installed, in order to provide greater physical protection against knocks. Yes, the GR/GR II is significantly bigger with the hood and adapter, but it is still very light, and way smaller than a DSLR. My GR II, with this adapter and hood attached, feels like a near-perfect walk-around/street photography tool.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Adds some versatility and bulk The best feature of the Ricoh GR is it's a nice small compact camera with superb image quality that you can take anywhere. Why put this on the front? It comes with a hood for blocking glare on overly bright days but also allows attachment of things like the 21mm wide angle adapter lens or filters. Personally I use the wide angle adapter from my old GRD1 with a step down adapter and love the results. Pretty fragile tho, I dropped my GR with the first one and it split, though it's hardly designed for dropping onto concrete, it did protect the GR so it was a worthy sacrifice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well. My Ricoh GR needed a cleaning I think because I turn the camera on and off frequently and the lens moving out and in sucks air into the camera. Now, with the adapter I have mounted a UV filter and during long outings I leave the camera on (going to sleep after one minute). A touch of the shutter button revives the camera with no movement of the lens. The camera responds instantly. With the attached hood the camera, obviously, is larger, but still very light weight. I now use a Lowepro 30 Dashpoint attached to my belt to carry the new larger set-up. It is with me all the time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Feeling secure but a little gouged in the pocketbook I like this little addition to my Ricoh GR II as it allows me to add a glass filter in front of the retractable lens. The fit is very secure with a lock switch on the barrel. Plastic is light but appears durable enough. It doubles the depth of your Ricoh with the hood off and nearly triples the depth with the hood on, so keep that in mind. It does not add much significant weight, however. The Ricoh lens now feels protected from dust and any other stray elements that might get in there. The only issue I have is the outrageous price. Regardless of being an essential add-on (for me) and being of decent build quality, it is still poor value for the money. The item would receive a higher score from me were it not for this fact alone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GH-3 Hood for my Ricoh GR II The GH-3 hood is a great accessory for my Ricoh GR II I recently purchased. It provides protection from sun flares and it looks great too. I would highly recommend this item.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best hood ever! I have used many hoods in the past but this is the best hood for the GR. No comparison. I tried the hood for the Nikkor 24-70 and 70-200 and they did not work. Definitly the one to get if you want it to work on your GR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice lens hood A very nice, but pricey hood and adapter. If you want to use the GW-3 wide angle lens on the GR, you will have to buy this also. I like being able to use filters with this adapter and hood. It would be great if Ricoh supplied this with the camera instead of charging more for the lens hood and adapter ring. That said I think it is a must have for the GR.
