Pentax 70mm f/2.4 overview

  • 1Description

The silver HD Pentax DA 70mm f/2.4 Limited Lens from Pentax is a prime portrait-length lens providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 105mm. This short-telephoto 23° angle of view is well-suited to portrait and landscape shooting as well as general long lens applications. A high-grade multi-layer HD coating has been applied to lens elements to help minimize flare and ghosting for enhanced contrast, clarity, and color fidelity and a nine-blade diaphragm contributes to an aesthetic out-of-focus quality to benefit shallow depth of field imagery. Additionally, an SP Protect coating has also been applied to the front lens element to effectively protect it from dirt, oil, and finger prints.

The compact form-factor of this lens integrates Pentax's Quick-Shift Focus System, which allows manual focus control over the lens at any time, even in AF mode, for precise handling over the focal plane.

Prime portrait-length lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 105mm, covering a longer-than-normal perspective that is well-suited to portraiture.
Compact lens design measures just 1"-thick.
High-grade multi-layer HD coating minimizes lens flare and ghosting to enhance contrast and color neutrality.
Quick-Shift Focus System enables manual focus control at all times for precise handling that is well-suited to selective focus imagery.
Super Protect coating helps to protect the front lens element from dirt and finger marks.

    Pentax 70mm f/2.4 reviews

HD Pentax DA 70mm f/2.4 Limited Lens (Silver) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning lens This lens is incredible. Mounted on a K-3, this lens is a killer, I used it mainly for portrait and close-up. At f/2.4 or even 2.8, the bokeh is wonderful and the details great. It is well build for a DA (actually a new HD DA type in Ricoh/Pentax arsenal). The only thing that can discourage people for buying this lens is this price. It is not a telezoom, not a SDM and not tropicalized but opens at f/2.4 constantly (very bright), slim for a 70mm and sold with a very discret hood (I really like it because very efficient). The only thing that decided me is the pictures taken with this lens. Once you see them, you want the lens. You won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and light I bought this lens to use mostly for portraits, because of the weight/performance compromise. It is so light and compact it enables me to carry a small bag for daily use, and also makes the camera (K3ii) much easier to handle compared to heavier options; for me that was worth the relatively lower brightness. Wide open portraits look great! Sharpness and iq are excellent, build quality is great. I keep the hood on all the time, because otherwise the provided lens cap won't attach. You could also use a pinch cap directly w/o the hood. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice prime lens Though I'm primarily a Nikon fan, I bought my K-3 because Nikon (and Canon) seem unaware of a thing called rain. I passed up some great shots from behind a waterfall in the Smokies because I wasn't going to take one of my D-800s into the heavy mist. So I initially bought only the WR (weather resistant) lenses to go with the K-3. Lately, however, I find myself buying more of the Pentax prime lenses simply because I like the K-3, and this lens performs well. It's great for portraits and general use when you simply want to get in a little closer. While the K-3 can be a little slow auto-focusing the longer telephotos, this one is fast, provides a spot-on focus, with a pleasant bokeh. Color is uniform across the entire frame with no aberrations noted at any aperture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens very sharp.Bokah ok but not spectacular. Good colours. Opted to get the 55mm 1.4 lens as this I think will give better bokeh for potraits. I have the 43mm ltd lens. Similar sharpness

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great small lens !!! Medium telephoto applications. Portraits. Very lightweight. Great picture quality. Fast auto focusing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Portrait Lens and Short Tele This is a new lens and I have shot fewer than 100 images, all inside with available light and varying ISO. Portraits of my cats are great. No people portraits available due to lack of model releases at this time. Lens has typical great Pentax Limited build quality and fast AF. The lens itself is a beautiful piece of machinery. Built-in sliding hood works well. Lens cap is not an issue and does not fall off unless you put it over the hood and then push the hood back into the barrel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first limited lens!! After reading the reviews for the non HD version, I was hoping the HD version would be even better. I can't directly compare this one with the older model but the top ratings are true. I was surprised how sharp it was at 2.4 but by F4 I was amazed. I generally shoot landscapes so I couldn't decide if i really needed this since it's more of a portrait lens. I bought it as like new and so it was already a good deal then @ had their prime sale and I couldn't resist. It arrived sealed in the original packaging so was shocked it really was more or less brand new.The bokeh is excellent, much better than any other lens in my bag. This is my first limited lens and it lives up to the hype. Colors and contrast just look different from my other lenses. As with most lenses, I would say this is sharpest from F4-F16. Beyond F16 it softens up again but nothing to complain about. You really only notice it if you look at 100%. This and the Pentax K-3 are a great combo. Would be interesting to compare the pictures to the soon to be here full frame and see if you can really see a difference. I guess I'll never know as the full frame is more than I need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Impressions I bought this lens to use for portraits and took it to photograph a prom. The focus speed was good but not great. I was also using my Olympus E-3 with 12-60mm SWD and it was about 3/4 that speed or so, not bad at all. Indoors it seemed a little better compared to the E-3 so pretty darn good. Color rendition was outstanding, just beautiful. Indoors the colors were a little odd during the dance, lots of blue it seemed. That might have been caused by WB, not sure. Tried other WB settings but didn't seem to make a difference. Probably just the DJ's lights. Bokeh was smooth and not busy, very nice. Separation of background was fantastic, nice 3D type look. The only negative was the lens was a little long on my K20D so made for some problems in tight quarters, a 50mm would probably have been better in some situations. Lens envy is non-existent with this lens, if you are insecure about having the smallest lens around you might want to steer clear. This lens is REALLY small, but the pictures it makes are superb. Considering I was shooting at 2.4 and shooting moving objects I had few OOF images. If using for sports you would definitely want to stop down to f4 or so. When shooting still subjects it is spot on every time. This lens exudes quality and subdued design. It ain't flashy or gimmicky it is a precision tool. The retractable lens hood is a joy to use. How Pentax/Ricoh made it move smooth and stay put I don't know, nor how they made a tele that small! Probably the best lens I've ever shot. Happy with the purchase.
