Pentax AF540FGZ II reviews

AF540FGZ II Flash is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small yet powerful, I want another one While I try NOT to use on camera flash, I find I have to in many occasions, particularly weddings and events, this is where this small, lightweight flash shines. The High Speed sync works like a charm. Just finished testing that on my 645Z, now to put it to work. The small light in front is a godsend, have no idea why other companies dont follow suit. My only gripe is that its not more powerful. So really, I give it 4.5 Stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very compact LED in front helps in focus but I doubt that it will be useful for videos. This flash is even smaller than my Yongnuo flashes. Hot Shue mount fits tight. No reflectior card built in but only wide angle diffuser. Zoom sange is very limited. Even less than the Yongnuo. HSS is only optional with P-TTL and since Pentax doesn't have remote P-TTL solutions (other than the slave option) then HSS can only be achieved on-camera. You can pair this flash with the Yongnuo while the Pentax is on camera and the Yongnuo, suprisingly, will follow the HSS from the Pentax, up to 1/4,000 without wny problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good performance and weatherproof! Though I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Nikon man, my Pentax K-3 is my go-to camera for shooting outdoors on rainy days. I bought this to use for those situations when you need a fill flash outdoors, and it has performed well in initial testing. The hot-shoe seals up very tightly, and having been zapped by other flash units in the rain (I have an old Vivitar that could be used for executions)I feel comfortable using this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Met and exceeded expectations; I had just purchased a K-3 Silver Edition with grip and flu card and was immediately asked to shoot an upcoming wedding. I owned an original AF360 but knew that I would need additional power to shoot in the reserved venue. I decided to rent the new AF540 FGZ II for the wedding and boy am I glad I did. Like so many others here have stated, it is small, powerful and very functional. There is no need for the pop-up white card of the previous version because of the front facing LED. It happens to provide a very nice catch light in portraits. The 540 II provided me with the best P-TTL accuracy I've had to date and it made a killer setup with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 ... especially at the reception. I'm now in a position to bUy my own 540 II right here from B&H and can't wait to get my grubby little hands on it. I can .. without any hesitation, recommend this flash to any Pentax user that is serious about their hobby or work. CHEERS!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has to go into the shop again When it works ... it's great. They have a known problem where they just work when they want to. First trip to the shop it was covered ... after a few uses, it is now acting up again. I cannot rely on this flash. The shop Pentax told me to send to, it took FOREVER to get fixed. I was about to buy a new flash and then one day the fixed flash shows up. They may have fixed with the newer models. It's too bad as it seems people have had some great stories about this flash. It has just not worked for me. Literally ....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellet with Pentax 645Z Recently bought a 645Z to go with my set of P entax 645 film camera lenses. Pentax flash from film days works in manual with some tricks, but not TTL and in general isnt really meant for digital. The Af540FGZ is smaller, works in TTL and produces very nice image, even when the flash is on camera

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pentax Lighting Options I purchased this item 2.5 years ago, July 2014 to use on my 645Z and it worked just fine. Not the strongest speedlight out there, but the best I could find for Pentax. Unfortunetly it only lasted 2.5 years, it just DIED , much to my dismay, right at an event. Some Im sure may last longer, but I didnt really use it so much that it should die so soon ( IMHO ). The Metz Flash for Pentax works great, Im hoping it last longer. I will not be purchasing this item in the future. And there is NO connection socket for an external Battery adapter for longer use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for serious shooters Well built, quality flash. Exactly what I was expecting. Works great with the Pentax 645Z. I keep a few of these around for mobile shooting where studio strobes are too cumbersome. Great for bouncing light at your subject off of walls or reflectors to fill in shadows in natural and urban settings.
