When describing the aptly-named 400Ws Astral Extreme AS-X-400 Monolight from Impact the operative word is speed. The light is designed so you'll never miss a shot while waiting for it to recycle. Recycling time is a fast 0.4 seconds at full power, flash duration is an impressive 1/5,000 of a second, and continuous shooting speed can reach a rapid-fire 10 frames per second. This strong emphasis on speed makes the Astral Extreme a smart choice for fashion and event shooting and since it's fast enough to capture almost any movement at its peak, it's ideal for high-speed photography. You can even bring the Astral Extreme on location, powering it from a generator or inverter if there's no AC power available.

Impact AS-X-400 Overview

Easy might be the next way to describe AS-X-400. Adjustments are easily made on the light's back panel which incorporates a carry handle. Soft push buttons control the modeling light, ready beep, and optical slave on/off function. The slave allows you set Instant-Fire or Skip Pre-flash modes and trigger the flash head at distances up to 33'. You can also hard wire the AS-X-400 to your camera via the included 1/4" phono sync cord, or easier still, use an optional wireless radio system such as Impact's ControlSync 16 to trigger the flash from up to 150' away and remotely control its power, modeling and audible alert.

The Astral Extreme's power level, which is adjustable in 1/10 stops over a 6 stop range is displayed on an easy-to-read LCD screen. Both power and modeling lamp intensity are adjustable via simple knobs. The 150W modeling light dims when the flash is triggered while a switchable beep indicates full recycling.

A handy feature of the AS-X-400 is the adjustable mounting bracket that allows you to find the center of gravity for better balance when using heavy front accessories such as large softboxes. A built-in receiver can support umbrella shafts up to 8mm and umbrellas up to 7' in diameter. The speedring/reflector mount is S-type, providing you with a wide range of choices, not only from Impact but from the many manufacturers who have standardized on this mount. Impact includes a reflector that accepts 7" grids.

Can I use this in hss with a Nikon d90? The Nikon has a hss option so I should be able to do this right?
    Asked by: Sasha
While the Nikon D90 is capable of use Auto-FP Sync (high speed sync), the Impact AS-X-400 does not offer this function.

Will this monolight work with Pocketwizard Flex ...

Will this monolight work with Pocketwizard Flex TT5 receivers for controlling flash combined with other speedlights? Can the AC5 controller control the power settings as well or just fire this monolight?
    Asked by: Ray
The AS-X-400 can be triggered by a Pocketwizard Flex TT5, however the power level would need to be set at the moonlight – it cannot be controlled by the Flex TT5. If you wish to control the power level of the AS-X-400 remotely, we would recommend using the Impact ControlSync 16 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1080465-REG/impact_controlsync_16_transmitter_and.html The PocketWizard AC3 controller would not be able to control the power settings either, it would only fire this moonlight.

    question

Do you remove the monolight Reflector when using the big Impact 7'umbrellas? Or do you leave it on and adjust umbrella furthest away?
    Asked by: Mark
To get the full spread of the umbrella I take it off.

    question

I want to use this monolight kit as key light, and my canon 580 EX ii as a fill flash on ETTL mode. I have canon 5d Mark ii. Is this possible? That means, my camera's hot shoe will be dedicated to the fill flash. What is the right cable type? I did a lot of search to understand the PC sync connector, but there are many types. Thanks for your help.
    Asked by: Mohamed N.
No, that is not possible. You cannot use a monolight and a Canon speedlight together with the speedlight in E-TTL mode. The Impact Astral Extreme AS-X-400 Monolight emits a single pulse of light when the camera's shutter is depressed. E-TLL II emits a pulse of flashes to measure and calculate exposure before the final flash pulse is emitted for the exposure. A manual pulse from a monolight and an E-TTL II pulse from a speedlight would not be in sync with one another. Your described setup would not work. If you wish to use your speedlight with the Impact monolight, you would have to set the flash output manually on the Canon 580EX II Speedlite Flash. Also, for the record, all PC sync connections are fully manual connections. PC sync cables do not transmit TTL automatic flash exposure information.

    question

I plan on using it with Nikon D500. Is it fully compatible with this camera? I mean high speed sync 1/4000 and 1/8000 and transmitter/receiver that comes with this light.
    Asked by: Valdas D.
The Impact Astral Extreme AS-X-400 Monolight is not a TTL unit or offer High Speed Sync (HSS) capabilities. You would have to shoot at your camera's listed flash sync speed, which is 1/250th second on the Nikon D500 DSLR camera. If you need a light that is fully compatible with Nikon's TTL system, you would have to look for a studio monolight strobe that indicates it is TTL compatible, such as the Impact Cruiser AC/DC 500Ws Battery Powered TTL Monolight, B&H # IMACDC500TTL, or the Impact Venture TTL-600 Battery-Powered Monolight, B&H # IMVETTL, along with the appropriate Impact Nikon wireless transmitter (either the Impact Cruiser Wireless Controller for Nikon Cameras, B&H # IMACDCTXN, or the Impact Venture Wireless Controller with Nikon Shoe, B&H # IMVEWCN).

    question

Is this portable with the use of a battery?
    Asked by: Joe
This unit is powered through AC power only. However, you can add the Photogenic Ion Lithium-ion Pure Sine Wave Inverter System B&H # PHION to power it on location without a wall outlet.

    question

Did anybody check the color temperature of the ASX400? It is supposed to be 5600K. I own two and had to adjust color T to approx. 4900K for studio portrait shoots with a white background using two ASX400 lights. I've used a Pentax K1. My colleague had to adjust to 4900K too using a Nikon D4.

    question

Which transmitter do I need to get this to work with my 5D Mark 2? I have Vello for my Speedlight but I am not sure if this one needs a different one. Also, can it be wireless or it always has to be corded?
    Asked by: Lucia
Assuming that your Vello remote comes with a set of sync cables for the receiver, you can use it to fire this monolight from your Canon 5D Mark II. This is turn would make a wireless connection.
