Autodesk 3ds Max 2014 Design for Owners of Autodesk 2013 Software is an electronic download for users who currently own any Autodesk 2013 product. The software is a comprehensive 3D animation and modeling program geared toward architects, engineers, and other commercial users. In addition to the viewport and many other standard 3D animation and modeling tools that carry over from the more media-oriented 3ds Max, 3ds Max Design incorporates additional tools tailored for its target users. These include integration with AutoCAD, Exposure Lighting Simulation and Analysis, Populate Crowd Generation, and the Civil View feature set.

3ds Max can create just about any type of 3D object or environment you might want. Motion graphics, models, PDF transitions, and more. For typical 3ds Max Design users, probably the most popular feature will be the ability to create 3ds visualizations of new buildings, civil engineering works, as well as new products under development. Output can be of varying quality, ranging from low resolution "draft"-quality exports to polished, photo-realistic prints and animations designed to make an impression on clients and customers.

Civil View Feature Set
Designed to simplify the process of visualizing civil engineering projects. Imports project files from AutoCAD, placing them within a template 3D scene that you can then populate with elements such as people, vehicles, trees, and many other objects
Exposure Lighting Simulation and Analysis
Simulate and then test the effects of natural lighting on an architectural space. Data from the analysis can then be exported to an Excel file. In addition, a virtual camera enables you to take snapshots from any angles, giving you a more subjective impression of the lighting aesthetics
Populate Crowd Generation
Allows you to add 3D background characters to your scene. Where movement is required, heading and direction will be mapped out along pathways called "flow", and for static groups, "idle areas" will be specified. For optimization, secondary parameters including crowd density, male-to-female ratio and resolution can then be adjusted
2D Pan and Zoom
Enabling Pan and Zoom mode allows you to move 3D elements added to the foreground scene without losing registration with the back plate
Perspective Match
Assists you in adding 3D elements to a 2D photographic background. After drawing vanishing lines over straight-line geometric elements in the background image, the "home grid", representing the perspective frame that the 3D elements will align themselves to, will automatically reposition itself bringing all of your 3D additions into correct perspective
Vector Graphics for Textures
Lets you use 2D vector graphics as maps on materials. The advantage of vector maps is that they do not lose resolution at any level of zoom, while maintaining an efficient, scalable file size. You can also import AutoCAD pattern files as well as both types of Illustrator SVG formats
Adobe After Effects Interoperability
New for the 2014 addition, 3ds Max Design now features increased interoperability with After Effects projects, providing you with the flexibility choose the best tool at any given stage
Nvidia Iray Renderer
3ds Max is now capable of rendering Checker, Color Correction, Dent, Gradient, Gradient Ramp, Marble, Perlin Marble, Speckle, Substance, Tiles, Waves, Wood, and the mental ray Ocean shader
DirectX 11 Shader Support
Lets you leverage the power of Microsoft DirectX 11, allowing you to render higher quality assets in less time. Additionally, Windows 7 users can take advantage of Direct 3D 11 for improved Nitrous viewport performance
Nitrous Viewport
The Nitrous engine provides high quality real time rendering in the viewport
Configurable User Workspace
Tabbed selection allows you to toggle between different workspaces. In addition to defaults, you can fully customize these workspaces based on your needs
Data Transfer and Pipeline Integration
Single step transfer of data and objects to other Autodesk applications such as Softimage, MotionBuilder and Mudbox
