Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Overview

A flexible zoom covering a popular focal length range, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO from Olympus is a wide-to-portrait-length 24-80mm equivalent lens for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Its sophisticated optical design, which includes a variety of aspherical, low dispersion, and high refractive index elements, reduces both chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for notable clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A ZERO lens coating has also been applied to improve contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. Beyond the advanced lens design, this zoom is also characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, as well as its durable weather-sealed construction for working in a variety of conditions. Additionally, a Movie & Still Compatible autofocus system achieves fast, smooth, and silent focusing performance, and a manual focus clutch affords instant switching between focusing methods.

Standard wide-angle to portrait-length zoom lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-80mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables consistent low-light performance and selective focus control throughout the zoom range.
The lens construction integrates one aspherical ED (extra-low dispersion) element, two aspherical elements, one DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element, two extra-low dispersion elements, one HD element, and two HR (high-refractive index) elements into its design to minimize aberrations, distortion, and color fringing throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Manual focus clutch lets you quickly pull the focusing ring into place for direct, intuitive focus control.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Reviews

Solid glass. Great lens

So far so good. I like it better that the Panasonic 12-35 2.8. Glass is better and seems to find focus better when in auto focal mode. I use it with GH5. This and the Olympus 7-14mm are my two main go to lenses.

Good value for a good lens

I'm using this as a general purpose lens for my 4k BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera. This is a still lens and is not parfocal. I have not evaluated focus breathing. For zoom and focus control you need to get a heavier and much more expensive lens. As a variable prime, however, it is fine. Nice images and nice flare (see outdoor photo). It does have one flaw - pronounced distortion when wide (see indoor photo), hence four instead of five stars.

7.5-40mm would be the dream, otherwise FANTASTIC

Moving from a wide 7.5mm (14mm) lens to a 12 (24mm) lens, is okayyyyyyyyy, but I still get about double the FOV (field of view) it seems using my old lens still. This lens however does have way more versatility which I LOVE, but would be my absolute FAVORITE lens if it was a tad bit wider. I do love how this lens is a macro lens though, I can be so close to the camera and still get focus. Another huge positive of this lens is having a constant aperture, f/2.8 throughout the focal range, IT'S GREAT. Again, if it was 7.5-40mm, darn it would be a masterpiece all stop lens for me.

A versatile starter lens with some warped edges wide

It's a rock solid starter lens for your MFT camera and it's light enough that one can use it with the BMPCC4K and a single-operator gimbal. That said, there is minor warping at the wider settings so get ready for that. Nothing offensive, just enough to notice if you're looking for it.

Worth Every Penny

I have used this lens primarily for travel and landscape photography. It is excellent. Resolution, speed, size, weight all contribute to make this a great primary zoom choice. I have shot Northern Lights, in the rain, in low light (handheld to half a second), and can print gorgeous 17 x 22 prints with my Epson P-800. No super technical review, just that edge to edge my 17 x 22 prints shot with this lens (and the OMD-EM1- MKii) look terrific. That's all I need.

Excelent!

I use Olympus and Canon since the time of the Canon EOS 1N, Olympus OM4T and OM3T, these last two true privileges of engineering, with more than 200,000 photos each and without knowing the technical service, with their corresponding sets of L lenses for Canon and the brightest for Olympus. In the digital age I had from the Eos 5D MKll and the Olympus EM1. I still have a Canon 5D MKlV rig with all L-series zooms and lenses and I have the Olympus rig. I would not know how to explain or it would be extensive to explain why the Canon equipment stays in my house day after day, trip after trip and I end up with the Olympus in my backpack. the Canon is an excellent piece of equipment, but the Olympus, in addition to being an excellent piece of equipment, integrates with my body, feels like an extension of oneself, you use it, you perceive it and it transmits something to you when you are in the middle of the scene photographing. I have used this zoom long enough to share my impressions. The construction is excellent, if you are in a day with a lot of rain or in a windy place with a lot of dust or sand, you can be calm with this lens and your Olympus, you only think about continuing to take photos making these elements play in your shots if you want, without worrying about anything other than taking photos, then you arrive at your hotel room, put it under the water jet of the bathroom faucet, dry it gently with a napkin and it is ready and impeccable, it is a real pleasure. The image quality and sharpness of this zoom is really very very very good, at all focal lengths. The autofocus is silent and very fast. Precise manual focus. Switching from automatic focus to exclusive manual focus is very comfortable. a really excellent crystal.

Just buy this

This is an amazing lens; one lens to rule them all... Replaces all my primes for travel, and I've also used it on a copy stand.
