Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Overview

  • 1Description

A flexible zoom covering a popular focal length range, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO from Olympus is a wide-to-portrait-length 24-80mm equivalent lens for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Its sophisticated optical design, which includes a variety of aspherical, low dispersion, and high refractive index elements, reduces both chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for notable clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A ZERO lens coating has also been applied to improve contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. Beyond the advanced lens design, this zoom is also characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, as well as its durable weather-sealed construction for working in a variety of conditions. Additionally, a Movie & Still Compatible autofocus system achieves fast, smooth, and silent focusing performance, and a manual focus clutch affords instant switching between focusing methods.

Standard wide-angle to portrait-length zoom lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-80mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables consistent low-light performance and selective focus control throughout the zoom range.
The lens construction integrates one aspherical ED (extra-low dispersion) element, two aspherical elements, one DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element, two extra-low dispersion elements, one HD element, and two HR (high-refractive index) elements into its design to minimize aberrations, distortion, and color fringing throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Manual focus clutch lets you quickly pull the focusing ring into place for direct, intuitive focus control.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Reviews

M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 250.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from great pro zoom lens from Olympus! i have decided to switch to Micro Four Thirds recently and after reading countless reviews of the Olympus M Zuiko 12-40mm ED Pro lens, i fell for it. Paired it with the OMD EM-10 (Yes, i just love the EM10!), i am getting great results everytime! I just love this lens! I could have gone for prime lenses, but having a high-quality zoom lens is convenient. The image quality is top-notch! But....it seems to be the lens makes some noise when focusing. If you record video, you will hear it in the clip. Since i'm new to the lens, i have no idea if it's normal or not...again, i don't care much about video feature so it's not much of a concern.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens I wanted this lens for travel and also to take photographs of a new grandkid. The skin tones and sharpness of this lens is equal to any of the Canon L-series lenses I own. It rivals the Canon 85mm 1.2 at half the weight. The build quality is excellent. I realize that it is more expensive than other Olympus lenses; however, you will see a marked difference in quality. Realize that this lens is a f2.8 throughout the zoom range. Its low light capability is incredible. The other zoom lenses are f4.5 to 5.6...this will make a difference in a low light situation. If you like a shallow depth of field, this is the lens for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Lens in My Collection As has been noted before, this lens performs extremely well. My copy, at least, gives excellent image quality wide open at all focal lengths with virtually no chromatic abberation at 18X24 print size, no flare shooting backlit objects, nearly undetectable distortion at all focal lengths, vignetting is slight only at wider angle settings and only in the corners wide open. It balances well on my Panasonic GX8 and has very solid and attractive construction. The versatility makes it the lens I use for 90% of my shots. Bokeh is attractive, both near and far. Manual focus works a treat and is very handy for critical work. And it looks great on the GX8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT LENS - CONFIRMED I bought the M. Zuiko f/2.8 PRO lens for my new Olympus OMD e-M1 camera and couldn't be more impressed with it. In my Digital Photography class, the instructor is also impressed, as are the other students. It's not just good - it's GREAT. Easy to use, superb quality, a fine long-lasting investment at a very decent price. Getting kudos already about my photos, which are portrait, travel, & landscape. Am doing my own work now for marketing collateral and as good as anything we've had before. My only complaint? I had to wait 3 weeks after I received my camera, because it was backordered. Can't wait for the upcoming 40-150MM this year, too!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Believe the Reviews! Looking for one professional quality lens for my M-10 and this one is unbelievably good. The build quality is excellent. This lens is very sharp with wonderful color and contrast. Focus is right on. When I first received it I was a bit disappointed with the size and weight- was heftier than I was expecting. But after seeing the results I forgot about the weight. And it's not as though it is anywhere near as heavy or big as the lenses I had for my Nikon. Now I don't even think about it. If I could only afford one lens this is the one I would buy. It would make a wonderful travel lens too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bye Nikon - We had some laughs This glass, along with my E-M1, E-M5, and fleet of M43 primes has reached fruition. I just finished selling all my Nikon pro gear on @. This leaves me hanging a little waiting for the 40-150 F2.8 to come out later this year, but I figured if I waited for that to happen my Nikon gear would be worth less as others jump ship like I just did. The future is here. This lens on a OM-D E-M1 (with grip) makes for a very bright future indeed. But do grab all the Olympus primes from 17mm - 75mm for good measure. I like those particularly well on my E-M5 (no grip). Now here's the best part: I made money out of replacing my Nikon gear with my Olympus gear. Snicker snicker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens! I purchased this as an upgrade to the Olympus 12-50mm kit lens that came with my OM-D E-M5. While I felt the 12-50mm was already under appreciated, this lens has totally blown me away with it's sharpness corner to corner, fast focus, and quality of build. Just picking it up...you know it's something special. This lens is most always attached now, only getting supplanted by my 45mm when shooting portraits, and my Panasonic 100-300mm for wildlife shots. I think my 17mm street lens will see the sun less and less (though it may come out for nighttime street photography from time to time). Bottom line...BUY THIS LENS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A true Pro zoom I am not a fan of consumer zooms, they start out slow and end even slower, the image quality is rarely equal to prime lenses and most of them feel cheaply made. But the 12-40mm f2.8 is a true pro lens at a very affordable price. It is sharp and reasonably fast, at a constant F2.8, across its entire range. The image quality is right up there with the Olympus primes. It has an extra assignable function button built right in the lens and the same manual focus snap ring used on the Olympus 12mm and 17mm. The lens body is solid metal construction, it is weather resistant, and includes a hood that locks in place. With one of the OMD bodies, this becomes the perfect single-lens kit.

Will this lens work with Panasonic LUMIX G ...

Will this lens work with Panasonic LUMIX G DMC-G85MK?
Asked by: Brandon
I do not myself own an DSLR Panasonic camera; however, it is my understanding that the lens between Olympus and Panasonic are compatible. I learned that from John Greengo who is an instructor at Creative Live. I, myself, own an Olympus camera and I know I can use Panasonic lenses on my Olympus camera body. I believe the main difference is that Olympus has their Image Stabilization in the camera body and Panasonic has it in their lenses. I do not know if that will make a difference for you using an Olympus lens on your Panasonic body. I can tell you that the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro is absolutely one of my favorite lenses.

Is the lens compatible with the underwater housing PT-EP13 for the Olympus OMD-EM5 ii?
Asked by: Romain F.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens cannot be used in the Olympus PT-EP13 Underwater Housing for OM-D E-M5 Mark II. It is too large. A wider lens will allow you to get closer to your subjects and will produce better results. The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm f/4-5.6 Lens is compatible with the housing and will give you better results. For more underwater help send an email to uw@bhphoto.com.

Will this lens work with Panasonic G9’s body?

Will this lens work with Panasonic G9’s body?
Asked by: drayton
I don’t own a Panasonic camera, but I am taking a photography class with a teacher who shoots exclusively in Micro 4/3 format and use both Olympus and Panasonic/Leica lenses on his Olympus EM-1 body. I suspect that if the Panasonic lenses can be used on the Olympus, then the reverse is true. The Olympus lenses do not have image stabilization because the camera has it in the body, but otherwise it is a fantastic lens.

The M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens would work very well on a Olympus E-PM2 with or without an EVF attached to the camera.

Does the lens come with US warranty or global worldwide warranty?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens comes with a one year, limited US warranty. However, we do offer an extended service plan through a company called Square Trade that lasts for two or three years depending on your preference that covers the original provisions laid out by the manufacturer, as well as drops, spills, and other accidents, which is covered internationally: http://bhpho.to/1fMHaTB
