Panasonic AG-AC8 Overview

  • 1Description

The AG-AC8PJ AVCCAM HD Shoulder-Mount Camcorder from Panasonic provides 1080/60p recording capabilities in an ergonomic shoulder-mount design ideal for event videography. It features a wide-angle lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28mm that allows you to fit more people and backgrounds into the frame. Powerful 21x optical and 50x intelligent zooms let you capture scenes that are difficult to access, while a 1/4.5" high-sensitivity MOS sensor provides sharp images even in low light situations.

The camcorder records at resolutions up to 1080/60p with a maximum bit rate of 28Mbps to dual SD card slots. Choose to record to both cards simultaneously for data security, or use the relay mode which will switch to the second card when the first one is full, for extended recording times. The ergonomic design of the camcorder provides 4-points of contact for increased stability and provides a suitable distance between the 3.0" touchscreen LCD for comfortable viewing. Video outputs available are HDMI, component, and composite. A USB 2.0 interface allows footage to be transfer to external storage devices.

Other features include a 5-Axis Hybrid Optical Image Stabilizer, a Level Shot Function for correcting tiled shots, and a multi-purpose manual lens ring that controls focus, zoom, iris, white balance or shutter speed. A dynamic range stretch (DRS) feature is integrated into the system, providing a wider dynamic range when shooting in scenes with a great deal of contrast.

The camcorder also offers a photo mode that captures up to 20.4 megapixel 16:9 or 15.1 megapixel 4:3 still images. While recording video, it can take 9.4 megapixel 16:9 or 1.4 megapixel 4:3 images. A stereo microphone comes included with the camcorder.

Wide Range of Recording Formats
The camcorder records AVCHD footage in a wide range of recording formats, including 1920x1080/60p at 28Mbps, 1920x1080/60i at up to 24Mbps, 1440x1080/60i at 5Mbps, 1280x720/60p at 8Mbps, and 720x480/60i at 9Mbps.
1/4.5" High-Sensitivity MOS Sensor
The high sensitivity MOS sensor features larger photodiodes beneath each pixel than on a conventional sensor, allowing it to capture a more light and offer improved low light performance.
Wide-Angle 28mm f/1.8-3.5 Lens
With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28mm, the wide-angle f/1.8-3.5 lens lets you fit more people into the background when shooting in narrow spaces. It also is great for capturing expansive landscape shots. The large 3.9 x 5.5" lens hood blocks out unwanted light when shooting outdoors or in bright conditions.
21x Optical & 50x Intelligent Zoom
Capture scenes in areas that your camera can't get close to with a powerful 21x optical zoom range. A 50x high-resolution Intelligent zoom features lets you push the range farther, while preserving image resolution.
Dual SD Card Slots with Relay Auto Switch
The AG-AC8PJ features dual SD card slots that accept SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. You can choose to record simultaneously to two memory cards for extra data security, or use the Relay Auto Switch mode to continue recording to a second card when the first one is full. For gapless audio playback, use the Relay Scene combining function, available when transferring the files to an external HDD via USB connection.
Ergonomic and Functional Design
The shoulder-mount designed of the camcorder provides a 4-points of contact for increased stability. The 3.0" touchscreen LCD is 7.9 inches away from your eye, providing a comfortable distance for viewing. For good weight balance, the battery jacks are placed at the rear of the camera.
5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S.+
Suppresses blurring and jitters of shaky footage, allowing you to capture clear images in a variety of shooting conditions.
Multi-Purpose Lens Ring
The manual ring on the lens barrel can be programmed to provide fine and precise adjustment control of focus, zoom, iris, white balance, or shutter speed.
Level Shot Function
When enabled, the camcorder will automatically detect and correct non-level images. This lets you record more horizontal images without a tripod when shooting in unstable positions such as high-angle or low-angle shot.
20.4 Megapixel Still Images
In addition to HD video, the camcorder is able to produce high quality still images with a resolution of 20.4MP in 16:9 mode, and 15.1MP in 4:3 mode. While recording video, 9.4MP 16:9 stills and 1.4 megapixel 4:3 stills can be captured simultaneously.

    Panasonic AG-AC8 Reviews

AG-AC8PJ AVCCAM HD Shoulder-Mount Camcorder is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 47.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera for the price This is a great camera for the money, I use it for weddings special events and how-to videos, Looks very professional and like the old saying you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Performance is excellent for this price range of camera. My only complaint there was really no reason to change the battery just a little bit so that it won't work on other Panasonic's. Additional batteries are pricey and I would rather pay more for the camera then have them play this game of forcing me to buy additional overpriced batteries. Also it does not come with an external battery charger, battery's have to be charged on the camera. So any of your old Panasonic chargers Will be worthless with this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best shoulder video camera at this price AG-AC8 has all the features that one might want in a camera shoulder that price. Panasonic has made great improvements over the old AC7. I wish I had more dedicated buttons and XLR audio input, but no other cameras in this category has it. The picture quality is very good, if the lighting is decent. Even in dark places, the image noise is quite acceptable. Ergonomics are great, and the weight appropriate for the size of the camera, and the image stabilization works very well even recording as I walk. I was pleasantly surprised with the truly wide angle lens 28mm (equivalent).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All-show/All-go Form fit Camera My pro gear is all now BMC HD-to-4K and I bought this camera for personal recording and webcast/event uses. I wanted a shoulder mount form and this camera is that with 5 star looks and feels (only it is soooo lightweight due to plastic modeling) when I do a webcast/event people comment on that beautiful camera not knowing it costs less than their Canon or SONY prosumer camcorders - well a lot of them. Then there is the picture. For set-it-up and shoot camera work - with footage you can take up to 2.5K projectors and still hold the ultra high def digital cinema look - buy this camera and get to work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bad auto white balance Not bad camera, but the auto white balance is horrible, you have to use it manually. Also the video quality is not good, I use it 3 times then I sold it. I put a few more dollars and got the sony HXR-MC2500 that is much better in quality video, white balance, color, and other futures.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Camcorder I purchased two of these camcorders for use in a high school broadcasting class. The cameras are easy to use and have an excellent picture. This particular model was ordered because of the options for output such as composite, component and HDMI. I needed all three for use with some of the current equipment in the studio. It also has two SD card slots which is an excellent option for remote video. Also, there is a headphone jack and microphone inputs. Overall, I have been extremely impressed with the quality and options for our low budget needs.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OK, but not great Got the camera and it is very large and very light. Just a guess that it is mostly empty space inside and so large for no real reason. It feels like very cheap quality. The only up sides to its size are that its easier to stabilize when used as a handheld and looks cool to someone who doesn't know better. The picture quality is good, except had 3 times where the auto focus blurred for no reason during a 2 hour recording of a presentation. I like that it records to 2 cards and don't use the included microphone(s) so can't speak to them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Worth It! I use this camcorder for web videos, online news videos, web commercials and even TV commercials. When I show up at events, people often ask me what TV station I am with. I love it! It does fair in low light. You'll get the most out of this unit if you shoot manual though. It has really helped me to make the transition from shooting mainly in auto. I love shooting manual now, even with my DSLR.

    question

I have owned this camcorder for three months, and recently, the camcorder image (via both viewfinder and screen) started freezing both while recording, and not recording, often into a green slate. Turning off the camcorder does not eliminate the frozen image. I have to take the battery off and put it back on. Anyone experience this? The camera has been dry all along, and not involved in any collisions.

How long to charge the battery?
    Asked by: Richard R.
The included battery will take approximately 4 hours to fully charge from empty and will give you around 3 hours of filming time. This camera will also accept a larger capacity CGA-D54 battery, B&H #WACGAD5, which will take 7 hours to fully charge and will run for a bit over 6 hours.

    question

What types of lenses can you put on this camera
    Asked by: Daniel K.
This type of camcorder has a permanently fixed lens. This offers a great zoom range and economy. While you cannot remove the lens, you can put converter lenses on the front of it. Wide angle, telephoto and fisheye lens converters are available. See below.
