Desmond DNR-120 Overview

The DNR-120 Nodal Rail from Desmond is a 120mm upper rail that when used along with a panning head, a vertical rail, and a lower rail will make up a complete panoramic head.

Precision scales on the sides of the rail and the clamp allow for micro adjustments so that you can find your nodal point for each lens. This prevents you from having to make timely adjustments the next time you use that lens. A bull's eye bubble level on the rail ensures your camera is level on the horizontal and vertical planes.

Desmond DNR-120 Reviews

Too short for the purpose

I bought this for use on a superwide lens, afraid that a longer unit could be visible through the lens. It's quality seems adequate but it was too short for the purpose and I've since bought the Desmond 250mm plate and DPLEX-50 bidirectional clamp set which is much more versatile.

Nicely made and works as intended

Good quality rail, decent fit and finish, very solid. With the rail sideways, the heaviest thing tested in the clamp was 5 kilos--rick solid. The measurements appear to etched and not just painted on. A good selection of screw points and it has removable end stops on the bottom. The bubble level is accurate on my copy. i think Sunway has a slightly nicer screw mechanism, but I like Desmond's handle better.

Great value and quality

No issues with clamping on my RRS PG-01 pano-gimbal head system. Length is good for lenses between 12mm to at least 60mm on a Sony A6300.

Just the thing i was looking for..

very good build quality and the engraving of distance was nicely done. It seems it can hold a few pounds but try not to over load it for the safety of your equipment.

The very piece I needed..

I purchased the DNR-120 Nodal Rail to use in conjunction with an L-bracket as a support/stabilizer for a large lens I was using on my Sony A7X camera. The Rail is solid and nicely constructed, the paint is even, the screw adjuster works smoothly.. and best of all using it took the weight off my camera lens mount and transferred it to the bracket/rail so I can use the camera setup without a tripod in the field. I can even hang the camera off a strap knowing that the lens won't pull heavily on the mount. This is a great little tool using it the way I do, or maybe the way it was intended too ;)

It does the job

I bought this instead of purchasing the Nodal Slide that came with the Really Right Stuff PG-01 pano unit. It saved me about $80 and except for the label I can't see there would be any difference between this Nodal Slide and the RRS unit.

The good news, it works

The filter system i use with a 25mm has tight tolerances when in use with nodal rails, hence the purchase of this slide. The slide reference scale does not zero out at the clamp center, (camera screw), as other slides. The numbers are useless for transfer purposes of the no parallax point...to other rails. The thumb screw of this unit requires more turns to tighten or release a plate, than any other clamp I’ve used over the years. It will be definitely hard on your fingers when the cold mornings start.

Under the Nodal Rail, there are two 1/4-20 Threaded holes. Can someone measure me the distance from center to center of these holes?
Asked by: Jibu
The distance from the threading under the spirit level to the threading in middle of the clamp on the Desmond DNR-120 Nodal Rail (120mm) is approximately 80mm.

question

I use arca swiss plates sideways for my camera and I am planning to get a head with a native Arca Swiss mount, but it is forward facing instead of sideways. Will this item be a solution to my problem?
Asked by: Nicholas
The DNR-120 should do what you want it to do, and also allow you to balance the weight of the camera and lens on the tripod. It's extremely well made, and does exactly what I wanted it to do.

question

Is this compatible with the Really Right Stuff ball head and L bracket for the Canon 5D Mark III?
Asked by: Jeanne
I can't say for sure about RRS head, but would guess it is compatible. It works fine with my three Sirui heads and RRS clamps and canon 5d Mark 11 RRS L bracket. I can attest that is beautifully made and a bargain.
