    Pacific Image XA reviews

Prime Film XA Slide & Negative Scanner is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great quality but stopped working after 200 scans This is my first film scanner so I was really excited to get it. I placed the order and received it within two days which was great. The first scans I made went very smoothly and came out with high resolution and beautiful colors. After the first 200 scans (at highest 10000 dpi) the scanner would freeze and make a loud noise and not complete the scan. The only way to unfreeze the machine would be to power off and power on and restart the software. After that, sometimes it would make a scan or two and then freeze, but the scans would be blown out and unusable. It seems to be a mechanical problem with the scanner. It's so sad because those first 200 scans were fantastic. On to Epson...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet (you know what) scanner! I do not see anything wrong with this scanner, needless to say totally disagree with the bad reviews, If you have an issue positioning the frames is because the end of the film strip must be trimmed with scissors without any gaps. Silverfast sucks, is full of gimmicks and unnecessary menus. Cyberview is leaner, faster and less crashy besides that it lets you control the scanner functions and just lay back and use your computer! just scan the image with Cyberview and dump it on your Corel, Adobe or whatever software of your like. Make sure your film strips are flat and not curvy (typical with Tri X) your scanner will appreciate it. Platform Win 7 32 bits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic batch scanner! Other reviewers have complained about batch capabilities with film strips. This is a matter of the software, not the scanner. When using the included SilverFast 8, there are indeed problems. Problems of frame alignment, problems of scanning 6 frames on a strip that only has 4 frames, problems of exposure and density. On the other hand, when using CyberView X5, also included, these problems do not exist. CyberView, which works on both PC and Mac, has accurate frame alignment, accurate detection of number of frames on each film strip, excellent exposure and color balance. I have over 10,000 negative images to scan and anticipate no problem at all in getting these done. Excellent scanner when used with the CyberView X5!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from finally, my 35mm negs look decent After the first couple of days, I can safely say I am quite impressed with this scanner's capabilities. I've upgraded from an Epson V500 which served me well for several years. However, I could never coax enough resolution out of 35mm scans on the Epson. With a little careful tweaking, I can safely say the scans I get from the XA are finally decent enough to print, a reservation I had with previous technologies. I wasn't initially a fan of the bundled silverfast software (comes with the stripped down version) so I quickly switched to VueScan after successful results with the trial version. Hands down, quite happy with this investment to get the best out of some old negatives, and get me out there shooting more film!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Scanner I purchased the PIE ProFilm XA 3Ws ago after extensive search for the best 35mm film scanner that has the best specs for colour depth @ a reasonable price. I was extremely pleased by the results of my test scans on Kodachrome slides, colour & B&W negatives. I found that the results equals or exceeds scans I get from 6x6 film scans on the flatbed scanner I own (best on the Market to Date). I use SilverFast Ai Studio in scanning with both scanners and I get superbe and accurate colour & B&W. The scanner to date, exceeded my expectations.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from UPDATE AFTER 1000 SCANS... I previously gave this scanner 5* as giving generally quick, accurate batch scanning of film strips. However I am now returning it to B&H for a refund. It has begun failing intermittently. It will give a high pitched squeal then freeze. I'll turn it off, reset the software and try again. Sometimes it will work for a scan or two then freeze again. Sometimes it will not work again even after being turned off for several hours. Just not built for the long-term. Pity!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Only one I've ever owned I bought this to scan slides that I've had since the 1970's. You need to play with settings to get what you want but the machine isn't bad at all. For me, I've been scanning at 2500dpi at 16 bit to get the closest to what I want in quality and size. At this setting, it takes me just about 5 minutes to scan for a 4.50MB jpeg file. I tried to scan full boat at 10,000dpi at 16 bit and created files that were 700MB! I would give this device a 3-1/2 stars actually but I couldn't get the 1/2 star convention. The scanner doesn't remove the scratches as well as I hoped. The images aren't bad though. I haven't printed pictures using the files so I can't give any idea about that issue. For the money, I'm happy and glad to have made the purchase. This machine didn't scan the sunsets slides that I have anywhere near the color rendition of the slide but the deep, rich red colors of a Vietnam sunset is nothing like most people will ever see. I couldn't duplicate the colors with either the Photoshop or Nikon software that I have. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and for the average person, it will likely do the job.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Stopped working after six months - not recommended I've had this for about six months and maybe run around 15 to 20 rolls through it and now it has stopped working. Not really sure why or how, but it won't take up the negative strip and just sits there whirring when I power it up. I hear something rattling inside. It has a sticker voiding the warranty if I try to open it up. When it did work it was okay although unattended operation (like a pakon) isn't really that great since most of the time, it misaligns the frames about a third of they way through a roll of 24 so it can't really be used in the way it was designed and I still wound up cutting my strips and feeding them through six at a time. I may try to see if I can get this repaired but for now, it's back to my V600 and the negative holders to do my scanning for 35mm Very disappointed that something that cost around $400 seems to be so cheaply made.
