Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II Overview

Track fast-moving subjects and enjoy enhanced resolution with the upgraded 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II Lens from Sony. The standard telephoto zoom for professionals, this full-frame A-mount lens delivers exceptional quality and offers a fast and constant f/2.8 aperture for consistent exposures throughout the range. Further enhancing overall quality is the use of four extra-low dispersion elements to combat aberrations along with a Nano AR coating for limiting flare and increasing contrast. Also, it has a nine-blade circular diaphragm to help create smooth bokeh.

As a long lens commonly used for action and sports photography, this 70-200mm is equipped with a variety of tactile controls for more intuitive operation while shooting. This includes a Super Sonic wave AF Motor with a new LSI drive circuit for a 4x boost to tracking performance as well as an internal focus design that ensures the overall length does not change during use. Along with this, there are three focus holds buttons as well as an electronic focus range limiter switch for more precise focusing operation. Additionally, the lens is dust and moisture resistant and comes with a removable, rotating tripod collar.

This version II lens has been improved over its predecessor with enhanced reproduction of fine details across the frame and faster, more responsive focusing.
Designed for full-frame A-mount cameras, this 70-200mm zoom covers a versatile telephoto zoom range that is ideal for portraits, action, sports, and more. Also, it can be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide a 105-300mm equivalent zoom range.
A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Four extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
An SSM autofocus system with an enhanced algorithm and new LSI drive circuit provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing and much more responsive performance in tracking modes. The lens also features an internal focusing design that keeps the overall size constant and helps achieve a minimum focus distance of 3.9'.
An electronic focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and three focus hold buttons are also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
The lens is equipped with a removable and rotating tripod collar for added stability and reducing strain on the camera's lens mount.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
The included lens hood features a filter access window for making adjustments to rotating filters.
This lens is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters which can increase the effective focal length to 98-280mm and 140-400mm, respectively.

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II Reviews

Great lens, but expensive

I still don't understand why this lens costs almost 50% more than the version I 70-200 G did, but I've gotten some excellent photographs with it indoors in low light. Focusing on dancers in low light with my a99 has not been a problem. I just wish it cost less. When possible I use primes for indoors/low light situations, but if I need to be able to zoom I use this on one body and a 24-70 f/2.8 on another.

Awesome Lens

question

Is this lens compatible with the Sony Alpha AR7? If so, can it be used without vignetting?
Asked by: Anonymous
You would need a lens adapter to use the 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II Lens on the a7R. I would suggest looking at the Sony LA-EA4 (B&H # SOLAEA4). This is a full frame lens, so would cover the entire full frame sensor of the a7R.

question

Is the Sony 70-200mm G SSM II completely compatible with Sony A7S so that all functions of the camera are enabled with the lens. How does it respond to indoor low light without a flash?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Sony 70-200 f/2.8 G SSM II lens has a Sony A mount. To use that lens on a Sony A7s you need a lens adapter. The lens adapters are fine but in most cases will slow the focus down a little. The best adapter is the Sony A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter with Translucent Mirror Technology and the other one is called A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter. Both are listed below.

question

is this compatible with the sony a6000?
Asked by: Anonymous
No, it's not compatible. The lens is for Sony A mount cameras and the a6000 is an E mount camera despite it's name.

question

I've read that even though labeled as 200mm, the Tamron's true focal length is closer to somewhere between 182-188mm. How does the Sony 70-200mm G SSM II FOV compare to the Tamron (or Sigma, for that matter) @200mm? (e.g. the Canon version has been measured to be 199-200mm and the difference is obvious in side-by-side comparisons with the Tamron and Sigma at full telephoto.)
Asked by: Anonymous
Some of the discrepancies you are reading about are also how the focal length is measured. And the specifications the manufactures say are correct. We do not have tests referring it to be otherwise or with a comparison.

question

How is this 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II lens different from G Series 70-200mm f/2.8 G Telephoto Zoom Lens? $1000.00 increase in list price? What is the operational difference? Now approx. 4x faster than the preceding model, super-quiet autofocus now offers improved AF tracking of moving subjects compared with its predecessor. Optical performance is further enhanced with addition of Sonys proprietary Nano AR Coating that suppresses internal reflections for outstanding clarity contrast, from bright highlights to deepest blacks.
Asked by: Anonymous
Because the lens is approx. 4x faster and autofocus is super-quiet it is ideal for shooting video. The improved AF tracking of moving subjects is much faster than the early model. The lens coatings on the new lens will suppress internal reflections for outstanding clarity contrast, from bright highlights to deepest blacks.
