Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Overview

  • 1Description

Sony has managed to squeeze exceptional quality into the extraordinarily compact Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens, making it a near perfect match for full-frame E-mount cameras. It benefits greatly from Zeiss's optical technology, as it utilizes a Sonnar design with three double-sided aspherical to provide the relatively fast f/2.8 aperture with minimal aberrations. The lens is also equipped with Zeiss' T* anti-reflective coating to effectively eliminate flare and ghosting. Taking things up a notch is the linear autofocus motor and internal focusing design, resulting in fast, quiet, and responsive performance in stills and video as well providing a minimum focus distance of 13.8". On top of all this, the lens uses a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh and has a dust- and moisture-resistant construction that ensure it will keep functioning in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

Based on the Zeiss Sonnar optical concept, this lens uses a design with seven elements in five groups that helps achieve the large maximum aperture of f/2.8 while simultaneously reducing flare and improving contrast.
A wide-angle prime designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this 35mm lens will provide a excellent perspective for street photography, environmental portraits, and general-purpose shooting. It can also be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide an equivalent focal length of 52.5mm.
The f/2.8 maximum aperture allows users to create images with shallow depth of field and work in low-light conditions with relative ease.
Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
Three double-sided aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Included with the lens is a dedicated cap-style lens hood that is extremely compact and prevents flare. It also features its own 40.5mm filter thread in addition to the 49mm thread located on the lens.

Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Reviews

Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 124.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens for your A7 if you actually shoot all day. I don't understand why this lens has anything less than 5 stars from anyone. Yes, there is vignetting when shot wide open. No, there's no Image Stabilization. Yes, it's only f/2.8. SO WHAT? This lens is TINY and weighs almost nothing. When attached to a Sony A7ii, you don't need anything faster than f/2.8. The image stabilization allows me to shoot at 1/20 very safely, and I've included a handheld shot below shot at 0.8 seconds!!!! The only competitor to this lens is the 35/1.4. It costs over double and weighs FIVE times more. Do you want to carry FIVE times the weight all day? I'm spending 2 years traveling the world and this lens is what is on my camera 99% of the time. It's absolutely stellar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5-Star Lens This is a 5-star lens all the way. Don't listen to the arm-chair photographers who would rather peek at graphs and charts and view images at 100% on a computer monitor. I've used many 35mm focal length lenses in my photography career, and this lens is up there with offerings from Leica and bests some of the other big names--especially when paired with the Sony sensor. It's stunningly sharp, tiny, light, well made and a sheer pleasure to use on the smaller a6000/a6300 and the lighter (original a7/a7s/a7r) bodies, and even the a7II-series bodies. f2.8 is plenty fast for any sony sensor and renders beautiful out-of-focus areas even at f5.6. I recommend it without hesitation even for the steep asking price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This was a great purchase Yes, the others are right when they say this lens is sharp. I also agree that its small size and light weight make it a great match for the Sony A7 (which is what I use). I also find that the colors in the images I take with this lens are almost exactly like what I remember from the scene--hardly any color correcting is needed. And for me, the lens is also very versatile--normally I am out in nature taking pictures of flowers, but I took it to an air show a few weekends back and got some great shots with it there, too. P.S.--Yes, I know the lens hood seems a little strange but it doesn't bother me at all. It seems to work great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must-have kit lens I am mostly a videographer, but I do take my a7s with me on vacations for photos, and this (35MM) lens is the one that is always attached because of a few things: 1. It is small and light 2. It is 35mm, the perfect focal length on a FF sensor for on-the-go shooting 3. Autofocus is SUPER FAST 4. It is very sharp for such a small lens, and because of the zeiss glass the colors pop. Cons: 1. It only stops down to f/2.8, but again this is to keep the lens small, and on a a7/r/s the low light performance is great so you don't really need to stop down to f/1.4 If you are planning on stepping up to a sony a7/r/s I would definitely recommend you consider this lens as your first. It's the perfect combination of sharpness, image quality, and size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT FOR WHAT IT GIVES There are various reports on colour shift that you basically can't really see unless you spend your life looking for that sort of thing as opposed to making photographs. My experience with the lens so far is that it checks all the boxes for it's intended purpose. It's small, light, sharp, optically impressive, good AF, reasonably well built and a perfect fit for both cameras. I love what Sony are doing across their whole line, the choices they're making and the execution. I'm a Leica user and have a vast collection of Leica glass including their most impressive glass to date. SO you could say I have quite a discerning eye. That said I am so impressed with what I'm seeing from these cameras and lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully Surprised I expected this lens to be good (Zeiss, after all), but in the tests I've run so far, it is nothing short of wonderful. I have the 90mm f/2.8 Zeiss macro for full-frame. It seriously impresses. This 35mm. can hold it's own compared to the 90mm. Resolution is like that of a satellite surveillance optic. Focus is fast, accurate, quiet. Doesn't hurt that I'm using it with a Sony sensor. It makes the A7RII feel like a little point & shoot to handle, but the results are top notch full frame!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful This lens is great. I use it on a Sony A7rii and love it. It's a bit overpriced, especially considering it's 2.8, but once you see the images it's hard to say no, especially if you want to buy into the Sony ecosystem. I was previously shooting with Canon and Sigma lenses (which I also love) adapted to the Sony with the Sigma MC-11 adapter, which is woefully underrated. I did however desire to switch to Sony lenses to get all of the focus features and the lightning fast focus speed, which has been a game changer. If you're willing to dish out on Sony's premiums I'd highly recommend the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful IQ, compact. I love this lens. Thought the lack of aperture ring would bother me, but it doesn't. The way the lens interacts with the a7R to do (optional) automatic focus assist in MF mode is really great. Amazing how much that contributes to the quality of what I've been shooting. I assume the problem is in the camera, but the AF on the a7R isn't stellar. I have seen no evidence that continuous AF mode actually tracks anything. I have also seen the camera blow lots of shots where the face detect should have been a piece of cake. Lovely crisp focus on my daughter's hands - and they're cute too, but it's her face I'd like in focus. As I say, I assume that's a camera issue, not a lens issue.

    question

I'm going to purchase this lens for my Sony A7 so I'll have a lightweight small lens that I can have while skiing. For bright snow pictures would you suggest a circular polarizer filter and if so which one is the best?
    Asked by: Anonymous
A circular polarizer can be a good option for skiing, as it will darken your exposure by two stops. For a great choice, I suggest the B+W 49mm circular polarizer http://bhpho.to/1DXAFty. Should you want to darken by more than two stops, another option you can try is using a variable neutral density filter, such as the following made by Rodenstock: http://bhpho.to/1DXAWwJ

    question

is FE lens's focus ring mechanical or by-wire? many small body lenses such as m43 and fuji use by-wire focus, once the circuit is broken, the lens can no longer be used in any way.
    Asked by: Anonymous
This Sony lens has a mechanical focus ring.

Does this lens have manual focus capability?

Does this lens have manual focus capability?
    Asked by: andrew
Yes, you may focus manually with the Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens. With most Sony E-mount cameras, you would have to change the focus mode of your camera by going to the Camera Setting menu, selecting Focus Mode, and setting the camera to MF for Manual Focus. However, I recommend to check your camera's instruction manual for specific instructions on setting your camera's Focus Mode.

    question

Does the ring on the lens control apeture or focus? I would like to do manual focus if possible.
    Asked by: Enrique
The ring controls focus on a7ii. Camera must be set to MF mode.

    question

Does any part of the outside of this lens move when it is auto focused by the camera, i.e. does the manual focus ring move when it is auto focused or does the front element move in/out or turn? How well is the lens weather sealed?
    Asked by: Jay
Nothing moves. I can't comment on the sealing Because I never had to use it in rough weather.

    question

Will Sony's standard lens hood fit over a 49mm filter? I prefer not to use a 40.5mm filter attached to the front of the hood.
    Asked by: John
I have a Hoya EVO UV(0) 49mm filter that fits fine under the standard Sony lens hood. However, I have tried and returned many 49mm polarizing filters, and have not found one that fits beneath the lens hood.
