Works Fine

Needed this extra battery power for the night shooting that sometimes consumes a lot of battery power. This will work out fine. It also has a better grip feel when using a bigger lens since the Sony Alpha 7S is so light. The grip gives it some heft.

good build quality

It has good build quality and does not feel cheap. Would be nicer if you could charge the batteries with the usb vs having to remove each one and charge it though.

Over time connection will separate/ camera reboots

We own 4 of these for each of our a7s. They have all done the same thing. Over time the connection becomes unstable and when you bump the camera or hold it the wrong way the camera reboots and the file that is being recorded become corrupt. Going to try to get my money back. Wish me luck

Not for Me

This grip was a big disappointment. Yes, it works but it does not feel good in my hands. While other manufacturers seem to make a real effort to create grips that somehow accommodate the human hand Sony seems to have forgotten this all important step. If you need a second battery I suggest you put one in your pocket. The A7 series cameras could use a good grip...but this isn't it.

It Works, but..

Does what it's designed for. Holds two batteries and works great as a vertical grip. Unfortunately, it also greatly increases the wieght and size of the camera.

Good for power, not so for handling.

The Sony Vertical Grip addresses the principal concern of most A7 users: poor battery life. With a second battery in there you at least have a chance in high volume shooting or extremely low temperatures. The grip is designed for batteries to be loaded into a cartridge two at a time, though it will run on just one battery. The display in the camera will tell you how much charge is left in each battery and the cassette indicates which is #1 and which is #2 so there is no guess work involved if you have to change one. Although the overall construction is a little plasticky, the grip has excellent rubber coatings which make it feel very secure in your hands. The downside is the ergonomic design. It looks like it was designed someone who makes kitchen utensils. While it feels more substantial and easier to hold than before, the addition of the Vertical Grip causes as many problems as it solves. Compared with the top panel of the A7, the alignment of the buttons on the Vertical grip is rather different. None of the major controls is in the same relative position. The control wheels are aligned differently and the shutter release is in a different place relative to them. The C1 button is even harder to access. The shape of the grip is completely different to that of the camera. Of course, if you are one who prefers to use the top panel even in vertical format, this will not be a problem. For those of us who do it will be. I have always liked the way my old Canons handled in vertical format. My Olympus E-M1 leaves them for dead in the handling stakes. The Sony A7, while probably the best camera I have used, is a pig in this department and the grip isn't really an improvement. That said, there is much to recommend it but with some reservations.

I would buy this again.

So far, this grip works fine. If you've ever shot with the Sony A7s batteries then you know they are notorious for short charge lives. The dual slots for batteries is a big help as is the comfortable grip if you are shooting all day. The buttons work well and the fit into the camera is snug. I initially purchased this for use with my Sony A7s ii. This does NOT fit that camera. I kept it as I still use my A7s from time to time. Fit's perfectly with the A7s.

Poor Quality

I bought this at the same time I bought my Sony a7. After a couple of years the battery tray will start to fall apart. I've never had any problems with my 20+ year old Nikon vertical grips.

question

How is this grip going to effect follow focus, matte box height for a 15mm rig with baseplate. The extra height may pose a problem and I am holding all orders until I can get an answer
Asked by: Anonymous
This indeed is a consideration. It will affect your selection of the 15mm rod rig itself, the follow focus, the lens support (if any) and the matte box since the hand grip raises the camera approximatley 2. Look for a DSLR 15mm rod support system with a flat base, not a riser. See then if the follow focus you want can adjust it's height as well as the matte box's.
