Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G Overview

Inspired by the famous Noct NIKKOR, the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G from Nikon is a unique prime that pairs the distinct slightly long focal length with a fast maximum aperture. The bright f/1.4 design enables working in difficult lighting conditions and also permits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. In regard to the optics, a pair of aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion, spherical aberrations, and comatic aberrations to realize sharp, clear image quality throughout the aperture range. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor provides fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Slightly longer-than-normal prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however is also compatible with DX models where it provides an 87mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus techniques.
Two aspherical elements are used to greatly reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness, clarity, and accurate rendering. Additionally, the optical design has also been optimized for shooting at wider apertures, including f/1.4, and minimizes comatic aberrations and ensures even sharpness across the frame.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Good balance on D850. I find the combination enjoyable to walk around with.

Perfect Balance Superior Quality

You hardly know it's on the camera! The balance in your hand is ideal. Perfect for vertical panoramas when your background needs a little more weight. Sharp, silent, and fast. Larger sensors demand better glass.

Quiet and Fast

When you want to isolate your subject, this lens does it. Fast and sharp, perfect for still life and portrait shots. Feels good, balances well on almost all DSLR bodies.

Photographic IQ ... yours/not this lens

If you respond to this lens ... there’s a chance you’ve got the IQ that really counts in photography ... it’s not measured in line per millimeter ... and by the way, it’s no slouch in that regard either. Here’s some advice ... spend a year never allowing yourself to view anything you shoot at less than 300 dpi on your monitor. You’ll be ready for this lens.

Top notch optics!

This is truly a spectacular lens! I did a ton of research before buying it and I am glad I decided to go for it! It has great color saturation, contrast and sharpness! I now have the entire 1.4g series 24mm-85mm giving me a wide range of top top notch glass to capture the shots right the first time. The other thing that I REALLY like about this lens is the weight... or lack there of! I bought the 50mm art first and returned it... it did seem a bit sharper especially at 1.4, but the images looked flat and lifeless to me compared to my other 1.4g lenses... I also thought the Sigma is way too heavy for a 50mm prime IMO. I am really happy with the results I am getting with the 58 1.4g. I am primarily a portrait photographer and really like the focal length. I don’t typicality use lenses at their max aperture anyways so the need for intense sharpness is not needed at 1.4. In all I would say if you want a great optic and you have the budget buy the 58 1.4g... if you can deal with manual focus another option at this focal length is the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 Nocton... which I bought first, but turns out I really need auto focus for some clients depending if they have fast moving kids... the Voigtlander is now my back up or used for solo shoots where I have more time to focus.

An unusually artistic look

I am a full-time professional photographer who has been shooting pro for over 30 years. As you can imagine I have been through many cameras and lenses. Although I fully embrace digital equipment, its ceaseless effort towards perfection can actually lead to loss of character in my opinion. That's when a lens like this comes in. If you look at the hardcore by-the-numbers tests this lens fails. However, if you shoot with it you just might *love* it like I do. Nikon has clearly created this lens with total disregard to the technical testers, with one goal in mind: make beautiful photographs. Yes, it vignettes, yes, it distorts; but I shoot it at f/1.4 all the time and end up with stunning, artistic images that evoke a time before digital existed. In fact, when processing in Lightroom I usually leave the Lens Corrections setting turned off! If you like to shoot wide open and strive for an artistic look you will love this lens. Happy shooting!

Love At First Image

I read so much about this lens before buying it, I was ready for the disappointment in the first few images. NONSENSE! I shot a typical close focus subject at around f/1.4 or 1.8. in my home shortly after unboxing and wow! Sharpness where I wanted it and heavenly smooth bokeh everywhere else. In a couple days I did a full frame sharpness test at f/5.6 in my studio. Boom! Tack sharp everywhere. The only time I see any softness is at f/1.4 or 1.8 when close focused. That's when I want it! Perfect. The answer? Write The Check.

question

I read somewhere that this lens was made for a crop sensor; my question is....are there any reviews of this lens on a crop sensor? I have the Nikon D7000 and am trying to find a sharp lens with great bokeh for portraits, and similar to the 85mm on a full frame. Any suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated.
Asked by: Anonymous
This lens is an FX type lens, which means it is originally designed to be used on both Full-frame and crop-sensor cameras. I do not have any links to cite for you showing examples of it used on the D7000, but it is a very sharp lens with great shallow depth of field for your portrait work. It is one I would definitely recommend for your D7000 if you want something in the 85mm range. This lens is based on an original design of an early Nikon 58mm lens, and they improved upon it for use on DSLRs of both formats.

Is this lens adaptable without electrical ...

Is this lens adaptable without electrical contacts, i.e. is it manually focusable and is there an aperture lever on the mount?
Asked by: Baron
There is no manual way to set the aperture, without using an adapter.

question

I read about fine tuning this lens by one reviewer, but how is that done?
Asked by: Dan
I don't own this lens, but all Nikon lenses can be fine tuned using the camera menu and focusing on a printed scale at an angle to the single focal point. I use a bar code label. You need to be careful to check it at both near and distance. Most lenses do not need much/any change but my 35 1.4 G needs a +3 on several different bodies.
