Olympus LH-48B overview

  • 1Description

The black LH-48B Lens Hood for M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 Lens from Olympus is a metal lens hood designed specifically for the above mentioned 17mm f/1.8 lens. The primary purpose of a lens hood is to deflect unwanted light from entering the lens and producing flare. It can also provide a degree of protection for the lens from accidental impact and the elements. A dedicated lens hood is designed specifically for the focal length of its lens and provides enough extension to deflect light without intruding on the image frame.

    Olympus LH-48B reviews

LH-48B Lens Hood for M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 Lens (Black) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fit and finish, top notch quality Bought this to protect and enhance the 17mm f/1.8. I was surprised by the quality, fit and finish of this lens hood. It reminded me of my Leica gear. Works well with the built-in flash - does not create any shadows. Does not add much bulk. It's totally reasonable on an E-P3 and still balances well. Although it fits snug, it can be loosened very easily and in fact I dropped it the first time I tried to take it off - so be careful. It only takes a very slight turn of the knob. Speaking of the locking knob, it's really big and unsightly and depending on how you position it around the lens, it can get in the way.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superb quality The overall quality is just incredible. Solid, superb finish, I mean when you have this piece in your hand you understand immediately it's very high end. Of course it holds perfectly well and it matches the lens in a way that makes it look great too. The only reason for not giving it the 5 stars its quality would -I think- deserve is that it's a bit expensive, if we keep in mind what system and what lens it was made for: the 17mm 1.8 is a very fine lens, but it's just not necessarily the lens for which I would have design such a high quality/expensive lens hood...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricey, but better than cheaper options I used one of the generic 46mm screw-in hoods for my 17 f/1.8 for six months, but after getting a good deal on a couple 'official' Olympus hoods, I decided to complete the set. While the 17 f/1.8 was originally shown with a hood similar to the 12mm f/2's, I don't believe any other hood shipped prior to the LH-48B. When I first saw the LH-48B, I thought it was a screw-in hood like the generics, and couldn't imagine anything making it worth the price premium. However, it's actually a bit of a hybrid - it attaches like most other recent Olympus hoods, with a collar that slips over the end of the lens and tightens with a large thumbscrew. The LH-48B is larger in diameter than the generic screw-in hoods I've seen, but because it slips over the end of the lens, is just slightly less deep. Also, it matches the finish of the vaguely-champagne colored silver finish on the 17 1.8. It seems to work well - not noticeable better than the generics (though the lack of 'venting' probably keeps out a bit of stray light), but it does look nice on the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A well fitting, sturdy metal lens hood I often use the 17mm when shooting in a crowds such as fairs and public markets. Although a hood protects the lens from sun and light rain, my primary interest is protecting the lens from minor bumps. The lens hood is made of metal and it attaches securely providing much better protection than plastic third party hoods. At the same time it is quite light. One thing that the product photos do not show is that the hood mounts on the lens barrel and locks in place with using a thumbscrew, similar to the hoods for some of the other Olympus prime lenses. It is a very secure system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Made but Expensive I almost always use a lens shade to provide some measure of protection for the front element of my lenses during use in addition to their primary flare protection role. This shade is very well made, its metal construction matches the 17mm lens well, and it seems to attach securely to the lens without risk of marring the lens barrel. Unlike other Olympus MFT lens shades, it does not require removing a lens barrel trim ring to mount. A definite plus in my book. The cost is high, and I won't join the fray about whether Olympus should include this shade as part of the lens kit as it does with some of its other MFT lenses. I have no idea how many photographers who buy the 17mm lens will ever use the shade. Well designed and serves it purpose equals 4 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the Job Pros: Sturdy metal construction, offers some protection, can be reversed to stay on lens when not in use Cons: Thumbscrew tightening not nearly as convenient as screw-in or bayonet mount Comment: This (or some hood) should have been included with the lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sturdy, Attractive, a Bit Pricey Fits snugly with an external screw and creates a handsome appearance. I must complain that Olympus makes a high quality lens and then charges extra for the lens hood, though.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good hood but not perfect Great lens hood but a bit pricey. Well made. Only issue is that it is difficult to use with a polarizing filter. If you put the filter on before the hood you can't get the hood on. If you put the hood on first there is not enough space to screw the filter on and allow it to rotate..maybe there is a workaround but I haven't figuered it out.
