Sony NEX-FS700R overview

  • 1Description

The Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder body is an update to Sony's NEX-FS700U that enables 4K/2K 12-bit RAW output and S-Log2 recording capabilities. It retains all the features of the NEX-FS700U, including the native 4K sensor, Super Slow Motion recording, built-in ND filters, and CineGamma curves. 4K/2K RAW is recorded to the Sony AXS-R5 Recorder via the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit, or to compatible third party recorders such as Convergent Design's Odyssey 7Q via the 3G/HD-SDI output. The HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and external recorders are sold separately.

The Super 35mm sized sensor matches that of standard film and digital cinema cameras. It accepts interchangeable E-mount lenses, as well as a variety of 35mm SLR and DSLR lenses and professional cinema lenses with the use of optional third party adapters. On-board, the NEX-FS700R shoots full 1080p video in a range of frame rates up to 60p, with bursts of up to 240 fps in full HD resolution and 960fps at lower resolutions. When used with the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and AXS-R5 Recorder, you can record continuous 2K RAW at up to 240fps and 4K RAW at up to 60fps. 120fps 4K RAW recording is possible in 4 second bursts. This makes the NEX-FS700R a high-speed, 4K camera ready for professional shoots such as indie films, commercials, corporate videos, and music videos.

You have the option of recording AVCHD footage onto SD cards, Memory Stick Duo, or the HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory Unit via the FMU port. It can also output 4:2:2 uncompressed HD video via HDMI 1.4 or 3G/HD-SDI to an external recording unit. For enhanced exposure latitude, CineGamma curves, including S-Log2, and 800% 709 gamma curves are available. Other features include an ISO range of 320 to 64,000, a shotgun microphone with mount/carrying handle, dual XLR inputs for recording uncompressed, professional-level sound, a 3.5" LCD panel with detachable with viewfinder attachment, and built-in ND filters.

Super 35mm Exmor CMOS Sensor
The Super 35mm sized Exmor CMOS sensor matches that of standard film and digital cinema cameras. The sensor's large size offers a variety of advantages over small sensor cameras, including increased control over depth of field, higher sensitivity in low light, lower image noise, and improved dynamic range.
E-Mount Interchangeable Lens System
Sony's E-mount gives you the flexibility to use a wide variety of lenses with the NEX-FS700R. Shoot with high-quality Sony E-mount lenses or with Sony A-mount lens via the optional LA-EA1 mount adapter. You can also use 35mm SLR and DSLR lenses or professional cinema lenses with the use of optional third party adapters.
On-Board AVCHD Recording & Optional Flash Memory Unit
The camcorder supports Full HD 1920x1080 video at 60p, 30p, and 24p. Video is recording using the AVCHD codec at up to 28Mbps. One memory slot accepts either Memory Stick Duo or SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. You also have the option of recording to the optional HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory Unit using the FMU port. The HXR-FMU128 allows record times of 10 hours at 28Mbps. Simultaneous recording to the SD memory card and HXR-FMU128 is supported.
Slow & Quick Motion Recording
Shoot 120 and 240 fps bursts at Full HD 1920x1080 for super slow motion. Playback at 24 fps yields slow motion at 1/5 and 1/10 normal speed. At reduced resolutions, 480 and 960 fps bursts are available for even more creative possibilities. Other slow and quick motion frame rates available are 60, 30, 15, 8, 4, 2 and 1 fps in 60 Hz mode, or 50, 25, 12, 6, 3, 2 and 1 fps in 50 Hz mode.
4K/2K 12-Bit RAW Output
When used with the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and AXS-R5 Recorder, sold separately, you can continuously record 2K RAW up to 240fps and 4K RAW at up to 60fps, and 120fps in 4 second bursts. 120 and 240fps 2K is also supported by the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q. For lower resolution proxy files, you can simultaneously record to the AXS-R5 and to the camera's internal memory cards. Files will have matching time code, start frame, stop frame, file names, and other metadata.
Modular Design
Depending on your needs, the modular design lets you add a matte box, rods, and viewfinder hood for shoulder-mount shooting, or lets you leave the camera stripped down for lightweight, handheld use. A top handle attaches with two screws and the right side of the FS700U features an industry-standard Arri rosette mount for adding handles and other accessories. 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch screw holes on the top and bottom provide support for a range of accessories. The tape-measure hook and image sensor position index help when measuring focus on set. There is also a Hold switch to prevent accidental setting changes during a shot.
Uncompressed 4:2:2 Output & RGB Output via HDMI 1.4
Output 4:2:2 uncompressed HD video with embedded timecode via HDMI 1.4 or 3G/HD-SDI to external recording units.

    Sony NEX-FS700R reviews

NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder (Body Only) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera For The Money What other camera can you get in this price range that can shoot 4K Raw and up to 960fps or 240fps in 2K Raw? nuff said? Form factor is a bit weird, but i'll live with it. I have an ENG camera for clients who want eng. This is a cinema camera and the color palette is on the money when shooting 4:2:0 to an internal card. It can also record 4:2:2 to the cheapest recorder (blade) and 4:4:4:4 to a slightly more expensive recorder. The super 35 chip is also key. Even at 4:2:0 in camera, the resolution is superb and when used on greenscreen in a shoot out with our other 4:2:0 camera it wins hands down! that should do it for anyone who hasn't made up their mind yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Machine!!! Love this camera! The Sony FS700 is a reliable workhorse, and when combined with the Atomos Shogun Inferno 4K recorder, your creative options sky rocket even more! I'm shooting on 4K nowadays. I've got the options of producing imagery in 4K DCI directly from this camera's sensor, with beautiful HDR pictures to colour grade and correct in DaVinci Resolve and release content in several different res flavours such as, 4K DCI if needed or in 4K UHD, 2K, or in HD. I'm really happy with my results. Thanks for reading. Cheers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing Camera The Sony FS700 is an extremely powerful camera on it's own. I used it for 2 years simply recording to the SD card onboard with good results. Th real power comes when you incorporate the Odyssey 7Q+ to the mix. The picture, colors and clarity are as good as it gets. I use the camera for documentary, corporate videos as well as sports. I will use it for a short film later this year. This is the first time ever I haven't bought another camera since 2013.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still a competitive camera I got in late in the game recently, buying the FS700R several years after initial FS700 introduction. The dramatic price drop is what persuaded me. The thing now costs about half what it did. After less than a year of use I can agree with what I read before purchasing: It's heavy and handheld use is limited due to it's ergonomics. I can easily shoot with it againt my body holding it from below, but without rigging you cannot use it shoulder mount. The slow motion is good and useful to give you a competitive advantage. The image quality of the internal AVCHD codec is good but adding the CD Odyssey 7Q+ takes it to another level indeed and increases the shelf-life usefulness as we move into a 4K world. The E-mount lens system means you can use lots of light weight native lenses, and with adapters can uses others such as Canon. Unlike the FS100 and EA50U/M which do not have built-in ND filters, the pricier FS700 does. For a run and gun camera, the more ergo-friendly EA50 is easily the winner due to ease of use, except for the missing ND. For set-up corporate shots and tripod shots, the FS700 offers a little more. Am I glad I bought it? Yes. Is it perfect? No. But it's the highest-end camera I have had the privelege of owning so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Cutting Edge, For Now I bought this specifically to go with an Odyssey 7Q+ I already owned. Together, they make a powerful duo with 4k ProRes at up to 120fps burst or 60fps continuous from the RAW 3G-SDI port. (Requires the RAW upgrade on the Odyssey.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera with room for improvements! I make videos for web, so I was looking for a really nice 1080p camera. This camera gives a really nice, sharp image (I think bc it has a 4k-ready sensor). Coming from a DSLR, I was never happy with the quality/softness of the wide-shots I'd take. This FS700 doesn't have that problem! The internal codec that the camera shoots on is pretty weak. It's tough to do any sort of color grading/compositing. I'd highly suggest getting an external recorder, like anything by Atomos, to bypass this issue. Not much to say about the slow-motion capabilities except for WOW. Really nice quality. Also doesn't require as much light as I had feared.Beware, once you add all the goodies that take this camera to the next level (external recorder, shotgun mic, big battery, etc) the rig can get pretty darn heavy. So be sure to invest in a nice shoulder rig since the screw on hand strap that comes with the camera is not an ideal way to get steady shots.Absolutely super satisfied with this camera. There was also an offer for a free metabones adapter when I bought the camera. The adapter works great and it lets me use my Canon lenses which is amazingly convenient!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FS700R & Odyssey 7Q+ The best camera ever made, especially with the Odyssey 7Q+. Use a battery BP-U90 for the Odyssey 7Q+ and LP for Sony and recorded all day with a battery and of course 240fps in ProRes is magic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again I have just spend a couple of days with 3 of Sony's latest offerings. The new compact XDCAM camcorder, the PMW100, the diminutive NXCAM HXR-NX30 and the NEX-FS700. If you've managed to miss all the noise, the FS700 is yet another camcorder with a Super 35mm sensor, this one recording to AVCHD and very, very similar to the Sony FS100.
