Sony NEX-FS700R Overview

  • 1Description

The Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens is an update to Sony's NEX-FS700U that enables 4K/2K 12-bit RAW output, S-Log2 recording capabilities, and features a Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS E-mount lens. The NEX-FS700R retains all the features of the NEX-FS700U, including the native 4K sensor, Super Slow Motion recording, built-in ND filters, and CineGamma curves. 4K/2K RAW is recorded to the Sony AXS-R5 Recorder via the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit, or to compatible third party recorders such as Convergent Design's Odyssey 7Q via the 3G/HD-SDI output. The HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and external recorders are sold separately.

The Super 35mm sized sensor matches that of standard film and digital cinema cameras. It accepts interchangeable E-mount lenses, as well as a variety of 35mm SLR and DSLR lenses and professional cinema lenses with the use of optional third party adapters. On-board, the NEX-FS700R shoots full 1080p video in a range of frame rates up to 60p, with bursts of up to 240 fps in full HD resolution and 960fps at lower resolutions. When used with the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and AXS-R5 Recorder, you can record continuous 2K RAW at up to 240fps and 4K RAW at up to 60fps. 120fps 4K RAW recording is possible in 4 second bursts. This makes the NEX-FS700R a high-speed, 4K camera ready for professional shoots such as indie films, commercials, corporate videos, and music videos.

You have the option of recording AVCHD footage onto SD cards, Memory Stick Duo, or the HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory Unit via the FMU port. It can also output 4:2:2 uncompressed HD video via HDMI 1.4 or 3G/HD-SDI to an external recording unit. For enhanced exposure latitude, CineGamma curves, including S-Log2, and 800% 709 gamma curves are available. Other features include an ISO range of 320 to 64,000, a shotgun microphone with mount/carrying handle, dual XLR inputs for recording uncompressed, professional-level sound, a 3.5" LCD panel with detachable with viewfinder attachment, and built-in ND filters.

The included Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 E-mount lens features an 11x zoom with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27-300mm. It has a quiet AF motor and Optical Steady Shot image stabilization, and a three-step, motorized Adjustable Zoom Speed control. In addition to three variable zoom speeds, the lens supports constant speed zooming for slow, smooth zoom. Zoom can be controlled from the zoom lever on the NEX-FS700R and by the standard control on the lens barrel.

  • NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder (Body Only)

The Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder body is an update to Sony's NEX-FS700U that enables 4K/2K 12-bit RAW output and S-Log2 recording capabilities. It retains all the features of the NEX-FS700U, including the native 4K sensor, Super Slow Motion recording, built-in ND filters, and CineGamma curves. 4K/2K RAW is recorded to the Sony AXS-R5 Recorder via the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit, or to compatible third party recorders such as Convergent Design's Odyssey 7Q via the 3G/HD-SDI output. Super 35mm Exmor CMOS Sensor
The Super 35mm sized Exmor CMOS sensor matches that of standard film and digital cinema cameras. The sensor's large size offers a variety of advantages over small sensor cameras, including increased control over depth of field, higher sensitivity in low light, lower image noise, and improved dynamic range.
    E-Mount Interchangeable Lens System
Sony's E-mount gives you the flexibility to use a wide variety of lenses with the NEX-FS700R. Shoot with high-quality Sony E-mount lenses or with Sony A-mount lens via the optional LA-EA1 mount adapter. You can also use 35mm SLR and DSLR lenses or professional cinema lenses with the use of optional third party adapters.
On-Board AVCHD Recording & Optional Flash Memory Unit
The camcorder supports Full HD 1920x1080 video at 60p, 30p, and 24p. Video is recording using the AVCHD codec at up to 28Mbps. One memory slot accepts either Memory Stick Duo or SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. You also have the option of recording to the optional HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory Unit using the FMU port. The HXR-FMU128 allows record times of 10 hours at 28Mbps. Simultaneous recording to the SD memory card and HXR-FMU128 is supported.
    Slow & Quick Motion Recording
Shoot 120 and 240 fps bursts at Full HD 1920x1080 for super slow motion. Playback at 24 fps yields slow motion at 1/5 and 1/10 normal speed. At reduced resolutions, 480 and 960 fps bursts are available for even more creative possibilities. Other slow and quick motion frame rates available are 60, 30, 15, 8, 4, 2 and 1 fps in 60 Hz mode, or 50, 25, 12, 6, 3, 2 and 1 fps in 50 Hz mode.
    4K/2K 12-Bit RAW Output
When used with the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and AXS-R5 Recorder, sold separately, you can continuously record 2K RAW up to 240fps and 4K RAW at up to 60fps, and 120fps in 4 second bursts. 120 and 240fps 2K is also supported by the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q. For lower resolution proxy files, you can simultaneously record to the AXS-R5 and to the camera's internal memory cards. Files will have matching time code, start frame, stop frame, file names, and other metadata.
    Modular Design
Depending on your needs, the modular design lets you add a matte box, rods, and viewfinder hood for shoulder-mount shooting, or lets you leave the camera stripped down for lightweight, handheld use. A top handle attaches with two screws and the right side of the FS700U features an industry-standard Arri rosette mount for adding handles and other accessories. 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch screw holes on the top and bottom provide support for a range of accessories. The tape-measure hook and image sensor position index help when measuring focus on set. There is also a Hold switch to prevent accidental setting changes during a shot.
Uncompressed 4:2:2 Output & RGB Output via HDMI 1.4
Output 4:2:2 uncompressed HD video with embedded timecode via HDMI 1.4 or 3G/HD-SDI to external recording units.

Make sure you have the right tool for both stills and movies with this E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens from Sony. Equipped with a power zoom mechanism that can be set to different speeds, users will enjoy smooth, precise zooms during their videos. Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, shooters will be able to make good use of the lens' vast zoom range, which is equivalent to 27-300mm. Also, it has a variable f/3.5-6.3 aperture to keep the overall size to a minimum and uses extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements to combat aberrations.

Ensuring sharp images at all focal lengths is built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to reduce the effects of camera shake. Also, it has an internal focus design which prevents the lens from changing length during focusing. Additionally, it is equipped with a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 18-200mm offers users a vast wide-angle to super telephoto range equivalent to 27-300mm.
A variable f/3.5-6.3 maximum aperture helps keep the lens' overall size and weight to a minimum.
Extra-low dispersion glass is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur. This lens also offers an Active Mode which provides stabilization, even at the wide end, when shooting movies.
Enjoy smooth zooms ideal for shooting movies with the power zoom mechanism which can have its speed adjusted to suit different styles and needs.
An internal focus mechanism contributes to faster, more responsive autofocus, the minimum focus distance of 11.8", and easier handling as the lens does not change in length during use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony NEX-FS700R Reviews

NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING CAMERA!!!!!! I use this camera primarily for weddings but even after only having it for two weeks, I could really see how almost anyone can use it for whatever they do. Not going back to a DSLR ever again, love the functionality of this video camera, love, love the slow motion, love the inter-changeable lenses, the weight is just right, not too light and not too heavy - although I have to get used to holding a heavier camera again. I seriously debated getting the sony a7s but decided on the fs700 and I'm so glad. It is so nice when wedding guests look at me and know that I am a professional - instead of them saying That thing shoots videos?!! You cannot go wrong with it, just make sure you have enough batteries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Camera at a Great Price We purchased this camera with a Convergent Designs Odyssey 7Q recorder to take into a coal mine for a documentary that we were shooting. The plan was to use the camera for the film and then get rid of it. After watching the footage from underground, we scrapped that plan. The low light performance of the FS700 is absolutely amazing. The picture graded with no problems and looked fantastic. When combined with the 7Q, especially in the 4K raw to ProRes mode, it looks as good as the Sony F5.If you are looking for a great camera at a really great price, take a look at the FS700.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this camera I'm a hobbiest and wanted to step up from my old SD tape based Sony VX-2000 to something HD with future expansion possibilities. This Sony is just what I wanted, includes a fantastic array of features (that slo-mo is awesome) and for what I do with it (short subject films mostly) it will be my main camera for many years to come. It even came with a nice rebate that gave a free adapter that will let me use my Canon lenses. Nice bonus. Would have liked it if the kit lens would work with the follow-focus kit I bought, but it didn't (the gear is blocked by the servo motor). B&H took the follow-focus kit back with no problems - B&H is a great company to work with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome camera The camera is not a toy or a point-and-shoot device. It gives you the possibility to make and work in many different fields. From science, as I intend to work, to high-end film makers. The incredible high fps rate with HD definition allows endless application in physical research. The price of the camera is far bellow the price of the only-high speed cameras available for scientific purpose. My advice to those will buy one is to purchase one SSD and one USB-SATA adapter to plug it in directly on the camera. It's much faster and bigger than the SD cards for quite the same price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wise choice for a fair price Our production company uses this camera for all our commercial and creative work. The ability to utilize the 240fps at full quality puts us ahead of our competitors. We really enjoy the battery life compared to a DSLR - we can use our Sony Battery all day without worrying about it. With the Odyssey 7Q we can accommodate Agencies with great 4k video. No camera around 8k can deliver that: sure the Blackmagic 4k can, but thinking practicality you won't find it to serve like you think. Few things that do cause some thought: the ISO likes to be around 320-640 to keep the noise down. You'll have issues if you go above that. We denoise everything every time even with the ISO at 320. The buttons on the camera are everywhere so you'll need to be careful not to bump it accidentally and ruin your setup. The lens that comes with the camera isn't up to par with doing professional shoots, so be sure to get the adapter for you current lenses. We like to run with an external monitor. The built-in LCD is too small to pull focus. The auto-focus isn't the best, but works when you can't do it yourself. Using S-Log2 is great, but be really makes a big impact when you have the Odyssey 7q. If you use the 4:2:0 to your SD card then try to use another profile or your image will fall apart before you get the look you need. Overall, a great camera. With external monitor you are future-proof for several years. The camera is easy for one gunner to use and great when you have a team. The weight is amazing and works well with the gear you may have for your DSLR. A great transition from DSLR to professional camcorder. A quality that easily competes with the $ + cameras. I recommend it if you have the need to spend under $12k and need slow motion. Slow motion makes this the camera to get. Even the 960fps in low quality mode is really fun to play around with. Go for it, you'll like this camera. Try a rental for a weekend and see if it fits your needs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Cam with some caveats. I basically am writing this review to echo the great things most people are saying, but I want to highlight that the There are no cons statement in the header of the BH reviews is misleading. Here are the cons:-This camera is really, really heavy and I would say handholding is nearly impossible.-Low light performance can be compared to something like a Canon 7D. Great up to 640, usable up to 1250, and pretty much garbage at 1600 and above.-The 4k Raw is beautiful when graded, but be prepared to spend a huge amount on SSDs. Filling two 512gb cards took all of 30 minutes.-The small form factor makes some of the buttons hard to access. This is a great cam, but people do need to be aware of this as the$street price may appeal to shooters that will not be able to utilize this the same way other inexpensive pro cams operate. It will require investing heavily in accessories that are much less dire to have on other cams.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One word: Incredible We use our camera for video production in Aspen, CO, where super slow motion powder shots are key. The camera is perfect for what we need. The look of our footage is crisp and the colors are incredible. The camera is user friendly and if you've ever used a Sony, it's an easy transition. A must have if you want to take your production to the next level.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Far So Good Coming from still photography and DSLR-based video, the FS700's stellar output is a delight. And I'll join the rest of the people praising the high frame rates - 240fps is more than just a cool toy. It's already contributed some first-rate polish to some early projects. As with others, I'm also learning to grapple with the camera's slightly unorthodox ergonomics, but it's growing on me. The bundled lens is indeed a slowish kit lens, with all of the compromises that usually brings. But for run and gun in OK light, it steps right up. I'm using the Metabones adapter to let me mount my large arsenal of Nikon glass, and that's where (for me) this rig really shines. Next stop: outboard HD recorder for less lossy standard stuff, and more sustained high speed segments - though native recording with the encoding that writes to internal SD is very useful as-is.
