    Sylvania SDVD1048 reviews

SDVD1048 10" Portable DVD Player is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fair construction quality-Picture OK This was purchased to keep our grandson occupied during Labor Day weekend travels. The choices for portable DVD players is limited, so I went with a name brand. Curtis International sells this under the Sylvania brand, and Curtis provides support and service. Warranty for parts and labor is a paltry 90 days. Picture quality is acceptable for this purpose, but the picture is not as not quite as sharp as a tablet. Controls are faily standard except for the unusual dual purpose of the pause and resume buttons which also serve as the up and down volume controls. When the button is depressed and released it pauses the video, and when it's held it controls the volume. After several attempts this will become apparent. Here is the Curtis instruction on how to use the controls: press shortly to play/pause, press longly to add volume. Using the remote control to adjust the volume is much easier as long as the remote can be pointed directly at the sensor window on the front of the player. Also, the included ear buds have rather poor sound quality and a set of headphones or ear buds is recommended for better sound fidelity. With moderately priced headphones sound quality is good. The unit worked well for about two hours and we played several DVDs without any issue. Then an OPEN message displayed and no further DVDs could be played for the duration of our holiday travels. The unit was not dropped, molested, crushed or handled roughly at any time. It was placed back into its included nylon travel case until we returned home. I'm a licensed amateur and commercial radio technician, so I decided to diagnose and fix the issue rather than return it or have it professionally repaired. A small microswitch that is actuated by closing the lid after inserting a DVD failed. The switch literally fell apart and the pieces were scattered inside the unit. A photo of the failed switch is attached. I replaced it with a more substantial microswitch, tested its operation, reassembled the unit, and it is now better than new. Overall the construction and build quality are fair, and I was dissapointed at the failure of a key component after such a short time. Curtis International and/or Sylvania needs to more closely monitor the quality of the components that are used during manufacture at the factory in China.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Are these problems a bug or a feature? I've complained to customer service at Curtis but have had no reply. A) Most annoying is lack of memory. When the player is turned off, under whatever circumstances, it loses all its settings for subtitles, volume, etc. It even completely loses its place in the program I am playing. I have never before encountered this. Even with my ancient (1990s) legacy player, the story picks up exactly where it has left off. Indeed, in more recent DVD players I've had, the story tends to start slightly earlier. Thus every time I turn on the DVD player, I am back to square one in dealing with the various ads, etc. at the beginning of the series, re-setting language, sound, etc. This situation is ancient and annoying. B) Volume. The unit itself is not at all serious about being heard under usual conditions. When the volume set to the max of 20, I can barely hear the set in a quiet room, with the unit only 2-3 feet away. However, with headphones (which I use at the gym), any setting over 1 is painfully loud. This seems extreme, and not at all what I have encountered before. Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, the picture quality ain't bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs as expected This DVD player mostly resides in our playroom for use by our elementary school aged children, although it also does travel with us on occasion. We have had it for two months now, and have had no issues. It functions in a similar manner to a previous DVD player we had (different make), and the kids were able to figure out how to use it on their own. For what it is (an inexpensive DVD player), it is doing what we expected it to do, and we are satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Met most of my expectations. I use this for passengers to view while on a trip. This is a nice, compact device. The picture could be a little brighter. The first one I received was really noisy. I called and they replaced it very fast. The replacement works okay.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Will not play with television I hoped to have one DVD player I could use to play DVDs through my television screen as well as take on trips. Unfortunately for me, this player does only the latter. As a portable DVD player only, it worked well n
