Apple iPad mini overview

  • 1Description

The 16GB iPad mini 2 with Retina Display from Apple has a smaller form factor than its big brother, the iPad Air. The iPad mini 2 is just 7.5mm thin and weighs less than 1 pound. Its smaller form factor makes it easier to hold in one hand. The iPad mini 2 comes in a space gray finish.

The 7.9" Retina Display makes its debut on the iPad mini 2, maintaining its enormous 2048 x 1536 native resolution. At 326 pixels per inch, the Retina Display can show up to 3.1 million pixels at a time. The Retina Display is also a capacitive touchscreen so you'll be able to utilize all the multi-touch gestures of iOS 7.

While the iPad mini 2 may have a smaller form factor than the iPad Air, it still has the same dual-core A7 chip. Apple introduces the 64-bit architecture with the A7 chip, allowing for more robust and powerful apps. In fact, the A7 chip runs four times faster than the previous generation iPad mini. Also, the A7 chip supports OpenGL ES version 3.0 so the iPad mini 2 can enable detailed graphics and visual effects once only possible on desktop computers and game consoles.

The A7 chip is accompanied by the M7 coprocessor, which measures the motion of the iPad mini 2. By pulling data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass, it lightens the load of the A7 chip. This frees up the A7 chip to focus on processing multiple tasks and maintaining fast performance. The iPad mini 2 may have the Retina Display, but it still manages to maintain its 10-hour battery life. That's because the A7 chip isn't just more powerful, it's also more efficient.

With iCloud, you can sync your iPad mini 2 to your other iOS devices and Mac computers. Push photos, download apps and continue from where you left off in iBooks with iCloud. iCloud also offers cloud storage so you can back up your contacts, photos and important documents to Apple's cloud servers. You can restore your iPad mini 2 to a previous state using iCloud.

Retina Display
The Retina Display provides 4 times more pixels and 44% greater color saturation than the iPad 2. Within the 7.9" LED-backlit touchscreen, the 2048 x 1536 native resolution render text and images at 326 pixels per inch and a total of over 3.1 million pixels. The display also features a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating for increased resolution during use
Dual-Core A7 Chip
Thanks to the A7 chip, apps run faster on the iPad mini 2. Games are more responsive and everything you do with the iPad mini 2 feels quicker. It's up to four times quicker than the previous-generation iPad mini 2. It also supports OpenGL ES version 3.0, enabling detailed graphics and visual effects once only possible on desktop computers and game consoles. And the A7 chip features 64-bit architecture, opening the door for even more robust and powerful apps
M7 Coprocessor
The iPad mini 2 was designed to be on the move. That's why the M7 coprocessor measures motion from your iPad mini 2 by pulling data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. This allows your apps to give you a better experience based on the movement of your iPad mini 2. It's a task that would normally fall to the A7 chip. But M7 is more efficient at it, which saves on power and opens up the A7 chip to focus on other tasks
Battery Life
The iPad mini 2 may be faster and more powerful, but it's not more power hungry. Even though it's four times faster than the previous generation iPad mini 2, it still gives you the same 10-hour battery life. That's because the A7 chip isn't just more powerful, but utilizes low voltage to be more efficient
802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi
With twice the Wi-Fi performance, thanks to two antennas and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technology, the iPad mini 2 can reach download speeds of up to 300 Mbps. With dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 802.11n Wi-Fi and MIMO, that's double the data rate of the previous-generation iPad mini 2. So now when you want to download a movie, share photos or documents with AirDrop, or just browse the web, your connection is even faster than before
FaceTime HD Camera
Sometimes it's nice to put a face to the conversation. And with FaceTime video calls on the iPad mini 2, your conversations look better than before. Make a video call over Wi-Fi or cellular and see (or show) every expression on the beautiful display. Now the FaceTime HD camera features a next-generation backside illumination sensor with larger pixels, which brightens up all your FaceTime chats, selfies, and group Photo Booth shots, even in low-light situations
5-Megapixel iSight Camera
The 5-megapixel iSight camera on iPad mini 2 was designed to help you capture all of life's moments at a moment's notice. Use the Retina display as an easy viewfinder to frame the perfect shot. Quickly swipe between capturing stills or 1080p Full HD video. Every time you shoot, the image signal processor in the A7 chip works with the camera to make a ton of adjustments and deliver a great picture or video automatically
iCloud
iCloud functions as a wireless service for you to keep all of your iOS & Mac devices in sync. You can also backup content to iCloud and restore to a previous backup from iCloud as well
Siri
Siri lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, check the latest scores, and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean and even talks back
AirPlay
AirPlay functions off of the wireless capabilities of the iPad mini 2 and allows you to seamlessly watch or listen to your content on your HDTV. When connected to the same wireless network, content can be controlled from the iPad mini 2 and ported through or watched on auxiliary devices

    Apple iPad mini reviews

16GB iPad mini 2 with Retina Display (Wi-Fi Only, Space Gray) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from iPad mini 2 w/ retina travels well. It's light weight, small form factor and high effectiveness on or off line make it a great tablet at home, but an even great table for the road. Slips into my wife's purse just as easily as into my back back. We're able to stay connected on the road and do just about anything we can do at home like banking, emailing, texting, facetime, excel, word, games, etc. Connecting to the cloud gives us additional data storage & retrieval and the power of 1000's of inexpensive, uesful apps. Could it be a little cheaper...? sure! But with Apple engineering you pay for quality and style and this iPad mini 2 has both. In short... you can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Apple I purchased the mini exclusively for use with my Inspire 1 quad copter. I'm an Android user normally but ran into some compatibility issues with the Inspire and my Samsung Tablet after an OS upgrade. After doing some research I found that the mini was a good alternative. Currently it's working great with the Inspire. I find that it's a good size, as I felt that its big brother, the iPad Air, would have been a bit big for my needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for Digital Portfolio How I use it: - I use my iPad Mini for mostly these reasons: 1) Digital portfolio for my photography 2) To watch videos in High Definition 3) Web-browsing 4) Backup for apps 5) Typing up notes (with my Logitech K811 bluetooth keyboard) What's great about it: - Its more compact size makes it much more reasonable and convenient to travel with. I also feel that the smaller size with Retina display makes the images even more appealing. It has a very long battery life for the the way I use it. I might be only charging it once a week at the most. What's not so great about it: - I honestly have no complaints for my usage of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sized Tablet I purchased the iPad as a Valentines gift for my wife. She has an aversion to all things 'computer' but she is picking it up really fast and liking it. She loves the smaller size and lighter weight over my iPad 3rd Gen. I was only going to get her an iPad mini but with B&H's reduced Valentine's pricing on the Retina mini there was no question about which unit to get. The display is amazing and with the much faster processor who could ask for anything more. We did have some problems syncing this iPad with my MacBook Pro running Mavericks, but time spent on the phone with customer service got everything going just right. I paired this up with the Apple Smart mini case and a Targus mini stylus. Just great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp Picture and Easy to use No surprises in this product. It does exactly what you expect and works great. It's fast and bright. The retina display is no joke, it's quite a pleasure to read small text on it. The only drawback I can think of at the moment is that Apple seems to have removed the auto-sleep/auto-wake function?? I use a 3rd party case, and when I close the cover, the ipad doesn't auto sleep (whereas it does to on the old iPad2). Some quick googling revealed that this feature is only activated when using the apple smart cover. Correct me if I'm wrong, but for now, I believe it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I am far from thrilled Pros: Smooth scrolling. Very good camera. Sharp display. Good battery life. Cons: Overpriced for what it is. Lots of applications are not optimized for the iPad (iPhone only) Bluetooth cannot be used to transfer files from/to the computer (Mac) everything has to be done through iTunes, and connected with a cable. Faulty hardware: WIFI speed drops by half, 95% of the time. I compared the iPad to my Mac and Android Smartphone several times, using the same speed test software with the same results. Buggy software: The notification center would disappear, the only way to get it to work again was to restart the device. Etc, etc, etc. Unreliable paperweight. Never again. I have been a happy Mac user for years (Since Mac OS 9), but iOS have very serious flaws compared to Android.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ipad Mini 2 I bought the Mini to fly my DJI Phantom 4 which it does flawlessly. It also does a lot more love it.
