The Hoya 82mm R72 Infrared Filter is a specialized filter used for infrared photography with digital cameras and specialized infrared film. This nearly opaque filter blocks all visible light up to 720nm, enabling recording of subject matter and scenes that are not visible under normal conditions. Due to the nature of infrared photography, the filter factor for this filter is highly variable and depends largely on the ISO sensitivity in use and lighting conditions.

This filter is constructed from high-quality optical glass and is set in an aluminum filter ring to provide increased rigidity and prevention from filter jamming.

Used for infrared photography applications with digital cameras and specialized IR film.
Blocks all visible light up to 720nm for photographing subjects and details that are not normally visible.
Variable filter factor depending on ISO sensitivity and lighting conditions.
Can be paired with colored black and white contrast filters to change the colored or contrast effects with this filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great on my IR modified camera I wanted the option to shoot both 590nm and 720nm on the same IR modified camera. So I had my camera modified for 590, and purchased this filter (plus a thread adapter to support 72mm as well) and now have the best of both worlds on one camera, with nice short exposure times. Very happy with the quality off this filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Full-Spectrum with Infrared Filter I had Life Pixel convert my Canon 7D body to Full-Spectrum (ultra-violet, visible, and infrared). I use this infrared filter to block out the UV and visible light. You have to do a custom white balance with the filter on the lens to identify the light source. The filter blocks the view finder, so you have to focus and compose using the Live View feature. On bright sunny days, its hard to see the LCD, so I purchased an elvid LCD Viewfinder to overcome those steps. The images still present an infrared/red color cast. My post processing was Lightroom using the -100% for saturation rather than clicking on the black-n-white. The pulling out of saturation seems to my to offer a little more infrared B/W contrast. Yes, it was worth the cost; and I would recommend it even for cameras that have not been converted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised I’ve always wanted to try infrared filters but always balked at the price. This BW filter is the first IR filter I have tried and so far, I am having quite a bit of fun. It came at the perfect time when my photos started to look comfortable but the IR awoke some feelings of adventure and got my artistic hemisphere of the brain motivated again. Anything that spurs creativity is a win in my book. As for quality, I have no complaints. It appears to be of high quality and durable build.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a True Infrared Filter Bought this today at B&H and took it for a spin in Central Park. Very disappointed by the results. The Hoya 82mm R72 Infrared Filter is not a true Infrared Fileter and it lets in a lot of visible red light, making the photos acquire an orange color. Returning it tomorrow!
