Polsen ULW-96 overview

  • 1Description

For capturing audio, the ULW-96 Camera-Mountable UHF Wireless System by Polsen is a broadcast-quality camera-mountable UHF wireless system that can be used for applications such as EFP (electronic field production), ENG (electronic news gathering), corporate videos, rehearsals, and more. The ULW-96 is a frequency-agile system with 96 selectable channels. Up to eight systems can be used simultaneously in the same location. To ensure quiet and reliable operation, the internal electronic components are IECQ-certified to meet international standards.

The ULW-96 is built with a line-level input that enables devices like an audio mixer to be transmitted to the receiver. It features a headphone output with level control that allows real-time monitoring of transmissions at comfortable volumes. The 20 mW radio frequency (RF) output level enables an operating range of more than 250' with relatively low intermodulation potential. The system includes the easy to conceal PL-5 mini lavalier microphone to accurately capture speech with a clear and natural sound.

In addition, the ULW-96 transmitter and receiver are enclosed in heavy-duty metal, built rugged, and are designed to provide protection from bumps and falls for the most rigorous field use. The frequency select buttons provide a secure lock to avoid accidental channel changes during performances. If you're looking for a UHF wireless system that offers professional features, flexibility and broadcast-quality audio, the ULW-96 will get the job done. A windscreen, mic clip, and carry case are included.

    Polsen ULW-96 reviews

    ULW-96 Camera-Mountable UHF Wireless System/96-Channel (640 to 664 MHz) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Caveat emptor, you get what you pay for We bought two of these to use on interviews, it looks and feels nice but that is not important. Here's my pro's and cons: Pro: - It's not too expensive. - Sturdy. - Comes with bag and accesories. Cons: - Constant hiss, low but it's there. - After some minutes of use the audio starts capturing interference, we changed the channel but the same thing happened. - One of the lav mics does not work properly, it's gain is low, you can fix this turning up the gain in the TX or RX but that also augments the hiss and the noise. Aside from all this, it has worked for us but we will not be purchasing one of these again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Polsen ULW-96 makes me sound like a Pro I purchased the Polsen ULW-96 a few weeks ago upon the recommendation of James at B&H.I conveyed to him my need for quality audio at a moderate price so that my historical tours and stories shared on my youtube site and/or my blog and facebook accounts would be the best. The unit was easy to install on the top of my Sony HD Z7U and the lav made it very easy to handle all aspects of the shoot from front end to back end by myself. I wanted the UHF to keep away the plane noise nearby and that has been accomplished. Most of my work is only a few feet from the camera and so I did not need a long distance system to pick up my voice, thus this unit was perfect. I only rated it four stars due to my not being a professional shooter but I consider it 5 stars when it comes to getting my work done and a quality product on air.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Choice I need a wireless mike for a video that I was going to do with my Nikon DSLR. Since the lower models were plastic and I was going to use this in the field I went with this version which was one of the few with metal construction. I am pleased with this, but really have to watch my volume settings on the microphone and where I place the mic. If I have it too low I get no sound at all and if I set it at about 1/3 it was somewhat distorted. The solution was to put the mike halfway down on my shirt and not close to my face. This produced the best results.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hiss Hiss To loud of a Hiss for me, traded them in for Sonys. The FCC is talking about auctioning off frequency's in the 600 block by 2017, then this system will be useless.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage BH Photo recommended this product to me. So, I bought 3 of these for students to use in the field and in the studio. I RARELY use them. The first time I used them, I had to send them all back because they weren't working. The company had to send me new ones. They worked a few times after that. a few months later I used them again and two of them stopped working. I contacted the company again but it was a few months past the warranty. Even though I only used the product 3 or 4 times, they are useless to me now. I will never purchase another Polsen product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just didn't work for me. I just couldn't get great audio with these. I tried to use them with my Canon 5D Mrk III, but I got a lot of hiss in the audio. I exchanged them for Sennheiser wireless and was able to adjust the sensitivity, shoot on manual record levels on the Canon 5D and get no hiss at all. Perhaps that problem could have been worked out, I just didn't have the time work on it. Also, the mic cable didn't not seem to be built very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound quality, low noise. I've read the reviews on Polson where it was indicated they have a high amount of background noise and suspected it was a gain mismatch issue, so I ordered a set. I was right. Out of the box, the transmitter and receiver are set for Mid and there was some noise going into my Sony DVCAM's XLR input. I then turned the gain to Hi on the transmitter (lavalier mic/bodypack) and the output gain of the receiver to Low, put the mic attenuator on my camera into the on position and the noise went away. You will also want to disengage the Phantom Power, since it's not needed and can cause unnecessary cable noise. At moderate speaking level ten inches from the microphone I was peaking at around -6db on the camera's VU meter. I presume loud talkers will make up the 6db to get me to 0 so I'm okay with that. Again, noise was indiscernible in that scenario. I then plugged the receiver into the 1/8 mic input jack of my Sony HXR-MC2500 shoulder camera. In Auto level control mode there was lots of noise, but there is with any signal outputting device, like a mixer or otherwise, with that setting on that camera. I set the camera's audio level control to Manual like I do for other line level sources I use with it and the Polson noise went away. With the 2500 I keep the manual setting to around 2 and that gives me all the noise-free signal I need from the Polson, a mixer output, etc. (secure the cable so there's no cable noise with the phantom power on this particular camera) The sound quality of the mic is what one can expect out of a good quality condenser. It is a small mic capsule, low profile. The case construction is robust and appears to be built as well as units costing more than twice the money. If you don't care about flashing brand names on your gear to keep up with the other guy then these units will be good for you. I've been using wireless microphones in the live sound field for 25 years and this system appears to be as good as the top brands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! So far I love this wireless mic. It picks up the voice beautifully and the range is pretty far. It does have some hissing, but I also have not gotten the chance to check the different channels for better sound. The background hiss that I did hear was soft and its not that noticeable on the video. Compared to using the camera microphone, this is a dream!
