Nikon 50mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition Lens is a fast normal prime lens that is designed for use on both Nikon FX and DX DSLRs. Its lightweight and stylish design integrates enhanced knurling on the focus ring to add a functional and aesthetic element that complement refined manual focusing control. When working with autofocus, a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) AF system is quick, precise, smooth, and quiet, which benefits both still and movie shooting.

One aspherical element is incorporated into the optical design to help minimize chromatic aberrations while also contributing to high image sharpness and clarity. A seven-blade rounded diaphragm helps to render a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques, which is further benefitted by the bright f/1.8 maximum aperture.

Normal-perspective prime lens is ideal for everyday shooting situations.
Fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in low-light conditions and for selective focus and shallow depth of field applications.
The SWM autofocus motor is fast, accurate, smooth, and near-silent to support working with both still imagery and movie recording. It also enables a seamless transition to manual focusing control for refined precision.
Easy-to-grip knurling and hatching on the manual focus ring contributes to more efficient handling when working in the manual focus mode.
One aspherical element contributes to high image sharpness while also minimizing chromatic aberrations and distortions.
A rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is well-suited to shallow depth of field imagery.
Compatible with both FX and DX-format DSLRS; when used with a DX-sized sensor, the apparent field of view will be equivalent to that of a 75mm lens.

    Nikon 50mm f/1.8 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is stellar. I've been using this lens around a year now and it has impressed me each time I put it on my camera. I use a crop-sensor DSLR so sometimes it gets a bit tight in certain situations, but when shooting portraits its performance is unmatched. The fast f/1.8 aperture allows for really creamy bokeh and a shallow depth of field that really separatesthe subject from the background. Not to mention it has great low-light performance as well. This lens is really superb for the price and the special edition aestheticupgrade is really worth the little extra money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Lens Investment This is the one of the best Nikon products that I have purchased. This is my current favorite lens to use. I purchased this lens a year ago, and have taken over 4000 pictures with this lens, and am quite pleased with the results. I have used this in weddings, and senior proms, and the results were fantastic. I have also used this in theme parks, and as a general walk around lens, in a street photography style and have shot some amazing photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly sharp & well-designed This lens is a significant upgrade from the 1.8D and well worth the price. While the Special Edition lens is essentially an aesthetic upgrade over the 1.8G, I do love how it feels in my hands, how it looks, and overall it feels like a sturdier lens than the 1.8G (that's worth the additional cost to me). Even wide open this lens is incredibly sharp. I took it through a series of tests, and it exceeded my expectations, especially between f2.8-11.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bokehlicious! I bought this mainly to take great pictures of my kids. It is spectacular. This is my first 50mm 1.8g. I'm a newbie photographer. After reading a lot of review and watching videos about whether one should be getting a 50mm or not. I love this lens. not only It has a reasonable price it is also awesome. hope to learn more and trying more lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice! It is as represented.. Good optics and good ergonomics overall. It's so light which is the best part. It's the same lens as the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Special Edition Lens I'm using this 50mm f/1.8 as a lighter weight alternative to my 17-55mm f/2.8. The 50mm is fairly sharp and fast at f/1.8. For the price, I think you will be happy with this lens. Should work seamlessly with all Nikon autofocus bodies and in manual focus mode on older Nikon film cameras.

    Date published: 2014-02-26
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome value! These little 50mm lenses are Nikon's best kept secret. They're built with cheap plastic except for the classy silver aluminum ring, but they're super sharp and gorgeous! I have two of them now, one standard and one special edition. I haven't tested the SE out in depth, but I'm expecting the same greatness I've seen from the standard.
